Rimfire ammo is a type of ammunition that is fired from a rimfire firearm. Rimfire firearms are those that fire ammunition with a rim around the edge of the cartridge case. Rimfire ammo is less expensive to produce than centerfire ammo and is therefore typically less expensive to purchase. Rimfire ammo is available in a variety of calibers and is popular for use in pistols, rifles, and shotguns.
From its low cost, lack of smoke, and general cleanliness it is often chosen by novice shooters for these reasons. Rimfire is also a very popular caliber for plinking and small varmint hunting.
Rimfire ammunition generally delivers lower muzzle velocities than centerfire ammunition due to the lighter bullets and smaller powders used in rimfire cartridges. For example, the popular .22 Long Rifle cartridge has a muzzle velocity of around 1,300 feet per second (400 m/s), while the .223 Remington reaches almost 3,200 ft/s (980 m/s).
The lower velocities and lack of recoil make it easier for shooters to control accuracy when firing from a bench rest or shooting freehand. The accuracy of rimfire weapons is also generally greater than that of centerfire weapons of the same caliber, due to the much tighter manufacturing tolerances associated with small-caliber ammunition.
Rimfire cartridges are also slightly more resistant to water damage than centerfire cartridges, as the primer is located in the base of the cartridge rather than in the head. Rimfire weapons are therefore less likely to misfire if they are exposed to rain or snow.
However, rimfire ammo is not without its drawbacks. The lower velocities mean that it is less effective for hunting larger game animals, and the light bullets can be deflected by wind more easily than heavier centerfire bullets. Rimfire ammunition is also more prone to misfires, due to the sensitive nature of the primer.
