What is 454 Casull Ammo? 💡

It is a type of centerfire handgun cartridge that was developed in 1959 by Dick Casull and Jack Fulmer. It is one of the most powerful handgun cartridges ever developed, and it has become popular with hunters and target shooters who need a round that can take down big games.

Features 🧐

The 454 Casull is a high-power revolver cartridge mainly used for hunting big game. Here are some features:

  • 🔷 Bullet Design: A good bullet must have excellent weight retention, high velocity, and the ability to penetrate deep into the target. The most common bullet designs include jacketed hollow points, flat noses, and soft points.
  • 🔷 Bullet Weight: The weight of the bullet is also important. A heavier bullet will offer higher penetration, better energy transfer, and better hunting performance.
  • 🔷 Velocity: The bullet’s velocity is the speed at which it travels. The velocity of this ammo is between 1,300 and 1,450 feet per second.
  • 🔷 Recoil: Due to its high-power nature of it, recoil can be a major issue for shooters. The ammo should have manageable recoil, making it easier for the shooter to control.
  • 🔷 Reloadability: Reloadability is a critical feature. Being able to reload your ammo can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Stopping power and penetration 💥

The 454 Casull cartridge is a powerful, large-bore round that is suitable for use in both handguns and rifles.

  • 💣 When it comes to stopping power, this round has more than enough for most applications. The high muzzle velocity of 1800 fps means that the bullet will hit its target with plenty of force, while the heavy bullet weight ensures deep penetration into whatever it hits.
  • 💣 This combination of speed and mass makes the 454 Casull an ideal round for hunting large game such as moose, bear, and wild boar.
  • 💣 For defense purposes, it can offer good protection against human attackers if used at close range. Its stopping power should be able to take any assailant down quickly while also delivering deep penetration beyond what other rounds are capable of providing.

I was at the range shooting clays and cans with my AR when a guy a few stalls down came over and asked me and my buddy if we had ever shot a .454 Casull before. We said no, and he offered to let us try it out. We walked over and he handed me a beautiful Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan with a full-size Hogue grip and a satin stainless finish. The gun had a 2.5″ barrel and was shooting HSM 300 grain lead cast “bear loads” at 1500 fps. After the first shot, I had to take a second to decide if I wanted to shoot the other 5 rounds. It was the most fun I’ve ever had shooting a handgun. It made my .44 mag 6″ Redhawk feel like a .40 S&W. I acquire one of these guns very shortly!

About a year ago, I had the opportunity to shoot a .454 Casull handgun. My impression was that I needed to be a bit angry to handle the gun. It felt like my shoulders and head needed to be positioned “over” the gun, like holding something angry underwater in front of me. The gun’s action was surprisingly smooth and light in single-action mode, but heavy in double-action mode. I thought to myself, “This will kill a bear”.

When I shot the .454 Casull, I leaned in more than I would with a regular handgun. That monster recoil needed to be absorbed somehow, right? I completely agree that this gun would easily kill a bear. The single action trigger was incredibly smooth and crisp, but it was hard to fully appreciate it knowing what was coming milliseconds later.

It’s cool! For my Redhawk 454, which has a longer barrel than yours, I cast 300-grain semi-wadcutters with gas checks, pushed by Accurate No 9. That load shoots well.

Just a word of caution – I wouldn’t suggest installing a spring kit to reduce the trigger pull. I made that mistake and ended up with some light strikes while shooting. So, I switched back to the factory springs.

I can’t say for sure, but in my experience, the 454 Casull does pack more of a punch than a 44 Magnum. I’ve shot both, and while the 44 Magnum is no slouch, the 454 Casull just feels like it hits harder. Of course, it all depends on the specific loads you’re using, but in general, I would say the 454 Casull is a more powerful round.

In my experience, the power difference between a .454 Casull and a .44 Magnum will depend on the specific ammunition being used. For example, factory 10mm ammo is often loaded to .40S&W levels, making it seem like there is no difference between the two rounds in a “test”. However, to get the most out of these pistol cartridges, handloading is necessary. I have found that while the ballistics of the .44 magnum and .454 Casull are not identical, the real difference is revealed when handloading. For instance, with a 355-grain bullet, the fastest you can push a .44 magnum is around 1245 fps, whereas you can achieve over 1400 fps with a .454 using a 360-grain bullet.

In my experience, the power of the 454 Casull cartridges depends heavily on the specific ammo being used. I prefer to hand load my ammo for my older Ruger Super Redhawk, which allows me to achieve higher velocities and greater power than many factory loads offer. Of course, it’s important to make sure your gun can handle these hotter loads safely.

I think it’s a good question, but let me ask you one in return: have you ever personally felt that your 44 magnum was not powerful enough for a given situation? I understand that there is a technical difference between the two cartridges, but in my opinion, a 44 magnum is already a very powerful round for most practical purposes. I have never encountered a situation where I felt that a 44 magnum was insufficient, and I appreciate that the ammunition is readily available. I don’t see the need for a firearm that requires hard-to-find rounds.

I’m not too concerned about practicality or conceal carry. I’m looking for something fun to shoot at the range and to carry with me in hog/bear country. For the .44 Mag, I’m interested in the S&W Model 629 Classic with a 5″ barrel. For the .454 Casull, I’m leaning towards the Ruger Super Redhawk Model 5505 with a 6″ or 7″ barrel. Has anyone used either of these guns? How do they compare, and which one did you prefer?

In my opinion, the .454 Casull is a great choice for range time and dangerous critter defense. It’s backward-compatible with .45 Colt, so you can choose the level of power you want. Recoil is subjective, so it’s up to personal preference. The Super Redhawk is heavier and chunkier than the 629, which helps to absorb recoil.

I’ve heard that 454 Casull are powerful enough to hunt bears, but I’m not sure if this is true.

Yes, I believe that anything over 10mm is considered capable of taking on a Grizzly or Brown bear in Alaska. As an Alaskan resident, I know that 10mm is considered the bare minimum for bear defense, but keep in mind that the effectiveness of the firearm also depends on the shooter’s skill level. I’ve heard stories of bears being taken down with 9mm and even .22 caliber firearms, but shot placement is crucial in these situations. In my opinion, the .454 Casull is more than sufficient for bear defense as long as you can hit the right parts of the bear.

I think the .454 Casull revolver would work well for defense purposes, but I wouldn’t choose it for hunting. I prefer using a rifle for hunting since they are more comfortable to shoot, and the longer barrel and lack of a cylinder gap tend to give revolver rounds a bit more power. However, finding an affordable .454 Casull rifle that isn’t a single shot is quite challenging.
