Why is it still the best for a big game? 🎯

The 30-06 is a powerful and versatile hunting rifle cartridge that has been around since 1906.

  • 😉 It’s a popular choice for big game hunters because of its stopping power and long-range accuracy.

🔶 When deciding which ammo to use for big game hunting, there are several things you want to consider.

  • ➡️ First, you’ll want to make sure you have enough energy to take down your target from any distance. With this ammo, you can be confident that you will have plenty of energy at both short and long ranges.
  • ➡️ Second, you want to make sure that your ammo hits accurately when shooting farther than 100 yards. It has a flatter trajectory, making it highly accurate and reliable even at longer distances.
  • ➡️ Finally, you want to make sure that your ammo is always pushing the maximum ballistic performance.

FAQ 🧐

What is the difference between 30-06 and 308 Winchester?

🔍 The main difference between the 30-06 and the 308 Winchester is that the 30-06 has more power and is better suited for taking down large game animals, while the 308 Winchester is a bit lighter and therefore has less recoil.

  • ✔️ Both cartridges are popular choices among hunters and shooters, and both are capable of good accuracy and long-range performance.
What are powders for 30-06 ammo?

😀 Powders are an essential part of the ammunition. Without them, the bullet wouldn’t be able to fire at all. The most common powders used for 30-06 ammo include ball powder, spherical powder, and tubular powder.

  • 🔷 Ball powders are known for their uniform burning rate and consistent performance. These rounds are great for use in machine guns or rapid-fire weapons due to their quick burn rate and stable trajectory.
  • 🔷 Spherical powders create very tight groups when fired and are especially suited for target shooters who demand exceptional accuracy from their rounds.
  • 🔷 The tubular powder is the fastest burning formula of the three and produces high velocities in addition to greater muzzle energy. This type of powder is great for hunting applications as it provides quicker cycling and increased knockdown power with little recoil, making follow-up shots easier.

More info in this video:

How much does it drop at 300 yards?

🤔 The 30-06 has a trajectory that is affected by elevation, wind speed, and the type of ammunition used. The drop at 300 yards will vary depending on the load you’re shooting.

  • ➡️ Generally, you can expect a 30-06 to drop between 8 and 10 inches at 300 yards with standard military ball ammo or hunting rounds.
  • ➡️ If you’re using match-grade ammo, then the drop could be as little as 4 or 5 inches.
  • ➡️ Additionally, if you use heavier grain bullets such as 150 gr or 180 gr., this can also affect the amount of drop.
What is the best grain bullet for a 30-06?

🤓 The 30-06 is a versatile round that can be used for a variety of purposes, so the answer to this question depends on what you plan to use it for.

  • ✅ If you’re searching for all-around ammo, go with a 165-grain bullet. This is a good middle-of-the-road option that will work well for hunting and target shooting.
  • ✅ Whether you need the ammo for deer hunting, choose a heavier bullet, such as a 180-grain bullet. These heavier bullets have more stopping power and are better suited for taking down larger games.
  • ✅ And if you want the ammo for long-range shooting, choose a lighter bullet, such as a 150-grain bullet. These bullets are designed to maintain their velocity over longer distances, making them ideal for long-range shooting.

I own and have used a 6.5 PRC, 6.5 Grendel, 300 Win Mag, and 30-06 to shoot deer, and I can confidently say that the 30-06 is a reliable and versatile round suitable for hunting almost any game in North America.

Based on my personal experience, I can confirm that the 30-06 is effective for hunting black bears. In the past two hunting seasons, I have successfully taken down a black bear with my 30-06, using 180-grain TTS from Barners, and neither bear was able to travel far. I do not doubt that this same loadout would be more than capable of taking down a whitetail deer.

In my opinion, the 30-06 may kick harder but the slight increase in muzzle velocity doesn’t necessarily make it significantly superior to the more ubiquitous .308, which is a NATO round. Both rounds shoot the same .30 projectiles and have the same ballistic coefficient, with the -06 providing only a small increase in velocity. However, either round is highly capable of taking down any North American game animal.

I’ve typically relied on Remington HTP Copper 168gr in the past, but I’m open to trying out some new loads this upcoming season. The maximum shooting distance would be 300 yards, but it’s more likely that I’ll be shooting within the 50-200 yard range. Any recommendation?

From my personal experience, I’ve taken down numerous deer using regular 150-grain SP – Federal Power-Shok. These rounds have consistently performed well, delivering instant and effective takedowns, all while being affordable. However, this upcoming hunting season, I’m planning on trying out reloads with 150-grain Remington Core-Lokt bullets, just for a change of pace.

I currently use Hornady Interlock SP bullets for hunting, but I’ve also had success taking down deer with 150-grain Remington Core-Lokt and Federal Power-Shok ammunition in the past. In my opinion, as long as a soft point expanding bullet is accurately placed, it will be effective for hunting. Ultimately, what matters most is that the bullet goes where you aim it.

I have a preference for Nosler brass cases when hunting whitetail. I specifically use the 180gr variation with my 30-06 rifle. While I have tried other, more affordable ammunition, I’ve noticed that as soon as I switch back to Nosler 180-grain Brass Cased, my rifle’s accuracy drastically improves. As a result, I am unwilling to use any ammunition of lower quality for my hunting needs.
