What is 40 S&W Ammo? 🧐

It is a centerfire pistol cartridge developed jointly by major American firearms manufacturers Smith & Wesson and Winchester. This round was developed from the ground up as a law enforcement cartridge.

.40 S&W cartridgeFeatures 💡

  • ➡️ Bullet Weight: The most common bullet weights for the .40 S&W cartridge are 165 grains and 180 grains.
  • The 165-grain bullets are lighter and have a higher velocity, making them a good choice for self-defense situations.
  • The 180-grain bullets are heavier and have more stopping power, making them a good choice for law enforcement and competition shooting.
  • ➡️ Bullet Design: The most common designs are full metal jackets (FMJ) and jacketed hollow points (JHP).
  • FMJ bullets are less expensive and are commonly used for target shooting and training.
  • JHP bullets, on the other hand, are designed to expand upon impact, creating a larger wound cavity and increasing the stopping power of the bullet. They are ideal for self-defense situations.
  • ➡️ Muzzle Velocity: Muzzle velocity is the speed at which the bullet exits the barrel of the gun. The higher the muzzle velocity, the flatter and faster the bullet will travel, making it easier to aim and hit targets accurately.
  • ➡️ Reliability: A reliable round fire consistently and not malfunction, which is especially important in self-defense and law enforcement situations.

Benefits of .40 S&W Ammo

Ballistic Performance and Effectivity 📝

A 40 S&W bullet’s construction affects how it performs in flight and upon impact with a target.

  • 🎯 For personal defense, hollow point rounds are the most popular choice among experienced shooters due to their superior terminal ballistics capabilities.
  • 🎯 When hunting or target shooting, full metal jacket (FMJ) ammunition is typically used as it will provide more consistent results between different firing distances.

⌛️ The right balance between velocity and kinetic energy determines the efficiency of a particular round when hunting or self-defense. Higher-velocity rounds are better suited for hunting and long-distance shooting, while lower-velocity rounds may be more suitable for self-defense at closer ranges.

How to reload it? 🛠️

For those shooters who prefer to reload their ammunition, the process of reloading ammo is relatively straightforward.

  • ✍️ The first step in the process is to identify the correct shell casing for your handgun. A 40 S&W shell has a nominal case length of 0.990 inches and can usually be identified by its brass coloring and raised primer cup in the center of one end.
  • ✍️ Once you have identified a suitable shell, fill it with powder using an appropriate weight recommended by your gun manufacturer or manual.
  • ✍️ Then insert a primer into the back end of the case before seating your bullet firmly at the mouth of the case.
  • ✍️ Finally, close off the space between the bullet and case with an appropriate wad or filler material then crimp around the neck of the case to secure the bullet in place.

🔍 Once you have finished reloading your ammunition, it is important to store it properly to ensure that it remains safe and reliable for years to come.

  • 🔐 Store your cartridges in a dry area away from moisture and direct sunlight with temperatures between 50-70°F for optimal results.
  • 🔐 It is also recommended to keep them out of reach from small children or pets and stay within all relevant laws.

What type of ammo do you prefer to use?

I prefer 40 S&W – 180 Grain HST JHP – Federal Premium Law Enforcement for my defensive ammo. Based on my testing, I have found that Speer Gold Dots and Federal HST both provide excellent expansion and penetration, while Winchester had the jacket separate from the lead core. Winchester fans may disagree with me, but I have conducted tests and have not been impressed with the results.

I like using 40 S&W – 165 Grain HST JHP – Federal Premium Law Enforcement ammo. I have shot it through my agency-issued Beretta and Glock, as well as in my off-duty Sig P229. I have fired thousands of rounds and have never experienced a malfunction with this ammo.

I tend to stay away from 180-grain projectiles for my defensive ammunition if I’m going to be unloading and chambering/rechambering it. There’s a higher risk of bullet setbacks, which can compress the powder and potentially cause problems. This risk is somewhat lessened with cannelured bullets, but it’s not completely mitigated. I think most gun manufacturers chambered for .40 have elongated their chamber throats to minimize the risk of catastrophic failures, so it may not be as big of a concern as it used to be.

I’m wondering if there is any real point in getting a .40 caliber gun. Currently, I only own a 9mm, but I came across a good deal on an M&P in .40. However, I don’t have any experience with this caliber.

In my opinion, yes. If you consider muzzle energy a useful metric, .40 delivers energy on par with .45 and 9mm+P. Recent advances in bullet design have allowed 9mm to catch up to .40 in terms of terminal ballistics, but the fact remains that .40 is the only widely adopted autoloading pistol round developed recently; 9mm and .45 are both over a century old. There will likely be advances which .40 can utilize that 9 and .45 can’t in the coming years.

As for me, I also shot .40 during the ammo shortage and didn’t have much trouble finding it. Another advantage of .40 is that you can often find great deals on police trade-in ammo from agencies that have switched to 9mm.

As I look to the future, I’m considering purchasing a handgun. After doing some research and receiving various opinions, I’m leaning toward the Glock 23. I like its size and capacity, and I’m intrigued by the .40 S&W caliber, although I haven’t fired one yet. However, I’ve also heard that the .40 can be too snappy for beginners and may not be the best choice for a first handgun.

To answer your question, I don’t believe that .40 S&W is too snappy for beginners. I am a big fan of the round and love shooting it. However, I do acknowledge that there are many reasons why one might choose 9mm over .40 S&W.

It depends on the person, I suppose. My first handgun was a .357 Magnum and I was such a novice with guns that I didn’t even know it could use a .38 Special for like a year into owning it. But it worked out pretty well for me. I’m more of a “baptism by fire” sort of guy anyway. I will say, from the.357 I went to .45 ACP and then to 9mm, and a couple of years in, I finally got to shoot a .40 cal, and I’d say it was the hardest to control and had the hardest recoil after the .357. What I liked a lot more about the Glock 19 than the Glock 23 was my ability for quick and accurate follow-up shots.

When I was shopping for my first handgun, I decided to go with the G23 in .40 S&W despite not having much experience shooting handguns. Surprisingly, I didn’t have any problems handling the 40. Later on, I did a comparison test with my friend’s G19 and found that there wasn’t much difference in recoil between the two. However, I would advise anyone looking to buy a handgun to try out different calibers before making a purchase.

When I first started shooting, I went with .40 S&W. In my experience, the perceived snappiness of the recoil can vary depending on the gun and the shooter. When I practiced at a square range, taking my time between shots, I was able to shoot 2-inch groups of 10 at a range maximum of 17 yards. However, when I started attending all-day run-and-gun classes where you go through 500 rounds, I realized that maybe a smaller caliber would be better suited for shooting at a faster pace.
