On the other hand, if you’re hunting in more open areas like fields or swamps, a larger shot size like 6 may be better as it will have more power and reach.
Regardless of which shot size you choose, it’s important to also consider the velocity and weight of the ammunition. Shooting heavier loads at higher velocities will provide more stopping power and accuracy, but it can also lead to more recoil and louder noise. It’s important to find a balance that works for you and your hunting style.
While either shot size 6 or 7.5 would suffice for a walk in the woods hunt, I personally prefer #6. Game loads are my preferred option, but I must admit that I have successfully taken down numerous birds using target loads as well.
When hunting for grouse or other small game, I have found that shot size #7.5 works well. My kid has had success using #7.5 target loads in his 20 gauge for this type of hunting. While we have purchased them at Cabela’s before, it can be difficult to find them in stock, so it’s important to keep a close eye on the shelves for availability.
When using non-toxic shot, I find shot sizes 5 or 6 to be ideal for hunting. Personally, I strongly dislike using shot size 7.5 for grouse hunting as I have had many instances where the birds were only wounded, which resulted in a difficult and unpleasant experience of having to chase after them. This is both cruel to the animal and detracts from the overall hunting experience. While shot size 7.5 may work well for smaller game, I have decided to no longer use it for grouse hunts with my 20 gauge shotgun. In my experience, shot sizes 5 or 6 strike a perfect balance between achieving a good pattern, avoiding excessive meat damage, and ensuring the ethical and reliable dispatch of the birds.
