Preparation of new brass cases for first-time shooting 🗼

🔰 First, inspect each piece of brass for any visible signs of wear or damage.

  • 📌 If any such damage is present, discard the piece of brass immediately as it may cause a dangerous malfunction if used.
  • 📌 Check for any signs of swelling, cracking, or other deformations in the sides or primer pockets as well.

🔰The next step is to clean the inside and outside of each piece of Lapua Brass thoroughly with a soft brush or cloth as well as a mild detergent solution.

  • 📌 This will help clear away dirt and debris that can lead to misfires and other malfunctions during shooting.
  • 📌 It is also important to deburr the primer pocket using a chamfering tool so that it will accept primers smoothly and evenly during reloading.

🔰 Finally, thoroughly dry each piece of brass before loading ammo into it.

  • 📌 This can be done by either air drying or using compressed air to blow off any remaining moisture from cleaning.

How To Choose Lapua Brass 📣

⚡ 1. Choose brass with uniform wall thickness – Uniform wall thickness ensures consistent internal volume and pressure measurements, which is essential for accuracy.

2. Don’t forget about metal composition – The metal composition is higher in copper than most other brands, making it resistant to deformation, cracking, and erosion over time. This means it will maintain its shape even after repeated firings.

3. Look for high-quality primer pockets – Primer pockets are a critical component of any cartridge case and can have a big impact on performance and reliability. Lapua Brass has some of the most consistent primer pockets available on the market today, so you can rest assured that your cases won’t let you down when shooting them off at the range or out in the field.

4. Consider the cost per round – It’s important to factor in not just the upfront cost of purchasing bulk brass but also how much each round costs based on weight and other factors like powder capacity and overall quality.

I’m planning on going antelope hunting in Wyoming next year and I’m considering developing a load for my rifle as the shot lengths will be further than what I’m used to in the east. I’m wondering if Lapua Brass would be worth the investment for this purpose. Initially, I plan to buy 40 rounds of factory ammo, specifically the Hornady American Whitetail, and test it out. Afterwards, I’ll use the leftover brass to develop my own loads. Since I’m not developing a bench rest round, I assume that factory brass will be sufficient for my needs. My rifle is a Savage model 11 in .243.

For most hunters, Lapuls brass or other high-quality brass options will suffice for developing an accurate hunting load. But the cost of Lapua Brass may not be justified for a hunting load, as it is typically more expensive than other brass options.
However, if you are looking to achieve the highest level of accuracy and consistency for your hunting load, Lapua Brass may be worth considering.

Some individuals tend to overthink the importance of brass selection for their rifle cartridges. With proper brass preparation, nearly any brand of brass can produce excellent results. However, it is worth noting that Lapua, Nosler, and Norma brass tend to require less preparation compared to other brands such as Winchester, Remington, or Federal. In my personal experience, I have found that using Lapua brass in my deer and antelope hunting rifle consistently yields groups of around .4 to .5 MOA without much effort.

Although it can be a bit pricey, Lapua brass is durable and has a long lifespan. It’s definitely worth the investment, especially for situations where accuracy is critical. While some shooters claim that 308 Lapua brass can last for 10 or more firings, I cannot personally attest to that yet. However, I have noticed that my Remington-Peters brass does not hold up as well as Lapua brass, so it’s important to consider the quality of brass for your intended use. Keep in mind that Lapua brass is not ideal for casual plinking, but rather for scenarios where every shot counts.

There’s no doubt that Lapua brass is the top choice for reloaders. The consistency in weight and capacity of this brass is exceptional, leading to precise and accurate loads. Although Lapua brass can be pricey, it can be used for many reloads and provides a great value in the long run. When used in combination with good handloading technique, this brass can achieve a very low standard deviation of 6 or 7 on a chronograph.
