Types of Pistol Lights ⚖️
👁🗨 There are several types of pistol lights available on the market, each with its own unique set of features and benefits. 📍 Some of the most common types include:
|🔘 Rail-mounted pistol lights
⇢ the most common type and are designed to attach to the accessory rail on the underside of the handgun’s frame. They provide a powerful beam of light directly from the gun, making it easier to aim in low-light conditions.
|🔘 Trigger guard-mounted
⇢ mounted on the trigger guard of the handgun and are typically smaller and more lightweight than rail-mounted lights. They may not be as bright as rail-mounted lights, but they can still provide adequate illumination for close-range shooting.
|🔘 Laser/light combo
⇢ combine the illumination of a flashlight with the targeting capabilities of a laser sight. This allows the shooter to quickly acquire and aim at their target in low light conditions, making them a popular choice for law enforcement and military applications.
⇢ attach to the slide of the handgun and provide a forward-facing light source that is less likely to cast shadows or blind the shooter. They are less common than rail-mounted lights but are still a popular option for some shooters.
|🔘 Pocket-sized pistol lights
⇢ small, compact lights that attach directly to the pistol grip and are designed for use with small, concealed-carry handguns. They are not as bright as larger variants, but they can still provide adequate illumination for close-range shooting.
📢 Overall, the type of a light that is best for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences, as well as the type of handgun you plan to use it with.

- 4️⃣ Size and weight: Note the size and weight of the pistol light, as it will add to the overall weight of your firearm. Take one that is lightweight and compact if you plan to use it for everyday carry.
- 5️⃣ Ease of use: Select a light with an easy-to-use activation switch that can be quickly and easily accessed while holding the firearm. Pay attention to additional features such as multiple light modes or a strobe function.
- 6️⃣ Durability: Look for a thing that is built to withstand the rigors of use in the field. Take one that is waterproof or water-resistant if you plan to use it in wet or humid conditions.
- 7️⃣ Budget: They can range in price from under $50 to over $300. Consider your budget and choose a pistol light that offers the features and functionality you need at a price you can afford.

For several years now, I have been using Streamlight TLR-1S lights on both my duty and personal pistols, and I must say that I have had nothing but complete success with them. All of my lights have been in use for over six years, and I have not experienced any problems with them.
In fact, one of my TLR-1S lights is so battered and dented that it is no longer perfectly round, yet it continues to function flawlessly.
Hey. Maybe you know what kind of batteries Olight pistol lights use?
Hello. 🔋 Most Olight pistol lights use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Some models may use disposable batteries like CR123A.
I have been using the TLR-2G weapon light for both my personal carry and hunting purposes for several years now, and I have not encountered any problems or issues with it. The light is powered by CR123A 3V Lithium Batteries.
Hello everyone, I am seeking information on pistol lights, specifically what options are essential and what features are considered luxuries. This would be my first pistol light, and my budget is around 120 dollars, whether I decide to purchase new or used. I would greatly appreciate any assistance or advice on this matter.
The Streamlight TLR-1 is an excellent, cost-effective, and reliable choice with a proven track record. This model typically retails for around $110 to $120 and runs on two CR123 batteries. Its popularity also means that finding holsters for your pistol with a TLR-1 attached is relatively easy.
Highly recommend using the TLR1 HL. Having it on most of my pistols, and I am even planning to purchase a few more in the future.
I personally only use Surefire products. They may be pricey, but they are really effective. While I am unsure about the cost of a used x200, I do know that they have significantly increased their brightness levels in recent years with newer models.
I have been using the TAR-1-HL with 800 lumens for a few months now, and I must say that it works quite well. I have used it in an indoor match, and it performed admirably while mounted on my M&P 2.0 compact. Recently, I purchased the Surefire X300U with 1000 lumens for my M&P Pro 5-inch, and I have noticed that while the Streamlight has a whiter beam, the Surefire has a tighter beam. The Surefire also seems to be sturdier, although it was twice as expensive as the Streamlight. I do prefer the interface on Streamlight, but that may be because I have had more experience with it. I have had no issues using either light indoors.
I recently installed a Surefire X300 Ultra A with 1000 lumens onto my Stacatto-P pistol, and I have to say, the light is incredibly bright. It’s so intense that it could potentially cause brain damage if pointed directly at someone. Nevertheless, I am thoroughly impressed with the performance of this light, although I did have to modify it to fit my pistol. I suspect that the STI pic rail is slightly larger than average, so I had to make some adjustments by using an emery nail file to modify the plastic mating surfaces. After the modification, the light fits perfectly and works great.
How do I mount a pistol light to my gun? Do I need some special details to do that?
🔧 Pistol lights typically attach to the accessory rail on the underside of the gun. ⚠️ Make sure to select a light that is compatible with your gun’s rail system.
📢 In general, to mount a pistol light, you will need to:
1️⃣ Make sure the gun is unloaded and the magazine is removed.
2️⃣ Slide the mounting bracket onto the accessory rail on the underside of the gun.
3️⃣ Tighten the mounting bracket onto the accessory rail using the provided screws.
4️⃣ Slide the light onto the mounting bracket until it clicks into place.
5️⃣ Tighten the locking mechanism to secure the light onto the mounting bracket.
📝Installation instructions may vary depending on the specific light and gun combination, but most lights come with mounting hardware and instructions.
In my personal experience, my 60 and 120-lumen Surefire lights create noticeably darker areas compared to my 650 and 1000-lumen Streamlight lights. Although this is just my opinion, I believe that the reflector is more critical than the output in terms of brightness. Additionally, I do not find the 1000-lumen Streamlight too bright, especially with its wide beam. Ultimately, opinions on this topic may vary.
Have a great day and good luck.
Both the TLR-7 and TLR-1 are excellent choices in my opinion. I have personally used both of them and have not encountered any issues.
Can’t go wrong with a tlr1-hl
I highly recommend the TLR-1HL, especially for concealed carry. It features a convenient paddle switch that can be used for momentary or on/off activation. The output and beam quality is also impressive.
