Installation 🛠️

Installing a buffer tube kit is quite straightforward, but it’s important to take all necessary safety precautions.

🚩 The first step is to make sure that the gunsmith tools needed are readily available, including a hammer, punch, or drift pins, an adjustable wrench, and a torque wrench.

  • 🧩 The next step is to remove all components from the tube kit, taking special care not to lose any of the small parts in the process.
  • 🧩 Once everything has been removed and set aside, it’s time to install the receiver extension into your AR-15 lower receiver. To do this, you will need two items – the castle nut and lock plate that come with the tube kit.
  • 🧩 Begin by inserting the receiver extension through the lower receiver and lightly tapping it in with a hammer. Once it is securely seated, use a punch or drift pin to secure it in place.
  • 🧩 Then, use an adjustable wrench to insert the castle nut onto the back of the buffer tube and tighten it until snug.
  • 🧩 Position the lock plate over the castle nut and use a torque wrench to ensure that everything is tightened correctly.
  • 🧩 Once all components are secured properly, you can now re-install all other components of your kit including the buffer retainer spring, end plate, buffer, and recoil spring assembly (if included). You’re now ready to go shooting!

I apologize for the lack of knowledge on this topic, but could someone please clarify the difference between commercial and mil-spec buffer tubes?

Specifically, the mil-spec version has measurements of 1.185″ from the side view and 1.148″ from the end-on view, while the commercial version has measurements of 1.170″ from the side view and 1.168″ from the end-on view.

I’m a bit uncertain about the compatibility of different buffer tubes with various styles of stocks. Specifically, I currently have a PSA M4 collapsible stock with 6 positions and a straight end, but I’m not sure if the buffer tube for this stock is different from those used with other styles of stock. This has left me feeling somewhat confused.

To clarify, the difference in buffer tube size is not determined by the style of the stock. Instead, the specific stock that fits with your particular tube will determine its size. In the case of a mil-spec buffer tube, it’s recommended to use mil-spec stocks. It’s important to note that not all manufacturers produce their products in both sizes, so if you have a specific stock in mind, make sure it’s available in the size that matches your tube. Alternatively, you can choose a buffer tube that matches the stock you want.

I’m currently in a dilemma regarding my PSA mil-spec buffer tube that came with my LPK. I’m wondering if it’s worth paying $40 to upgrade to a BCM tube, or if all mil-spec tubes are created equal. As an average AR owner, I may not be able to notice any difference, assuming there is one, but I’m willing to pay for the BCM tube if it can provide me with peace of mind about my home defense rifle’s reliability. My only concern is reliability, and I’m willing to spend the extra money if it can increase it even by a small margin.

While the brand may not matter, the quality of the buffer tube does. For example, a 7075 tube with rolled threads is essential for uncompromising performance. While dry film lube inside the tube is up to spec, it doesn’t hurt to add a little bit of grease. If you have these two features, then you’re likely to have the third, which is a reliable buffer tube. BCM tubes are one of the few metal pieces they sell that are reasonably priced.

When it comes to buffer tubes, it’s important not to compromise and go for 6061 material. Opt for a 7075 tube instead, even if it costs a few bucks more. After all, this part holds together the entire buffer system.

While the other parts of your gun may be mid to high-tier with quality components, your buffer tube is a no-name, random brand. The question is, is there any legitimate reason to swap it out other than for the sake of appearance?

If you go for a lower-quality buffer tube, you run the risk of poorly done threads, rough internals, and a loose fit with stocks. This is not only frustrating, but it can also lead to decreased reliability and performance. As a result, I prefer to stick with VLTOR A5, which I trust to have well-made buffer tubes with a good fit and finish. At a minimal additional cost, it’s a worthwhile investment for improved reliability and peace of mind. Plus, I like the system.

Many gun enthusiasts appreciate the way an A5-length buffer tube and matching buffer work with a rifle-length spring, especially on larger frame ARs. It’s important to note that buffer tubes can vary in materials, with some made from stronger 7075 aluminum and others made from softer 6061 aluminum. Some tubes also have a dry lubricant coating while others do not.

Tell me please about mil-spec and commercial buffer tubes and their differences.

A mil-spec buffer tube has the threads milled away, leaving them extended out and wider in diameter than the rest of the tube. In contrast, a commercial buffer tube only has the threads milled away, leaving the rest of the tube at a thicker diameter. The cheaper machining process of the commercial buffer tube allows for the use of slightly weaker materials and machining methods due to the thicker cross-section.

The mil-spec buffer tube has a larger diameter than the commercial one, but the height is the same for both. Additionally, the mil-spec tube has flat ends while the commercial tube has angled ends.
