Mil-Spec vs. Commercial Buffer Tubes ⚖️

🎎 Mil-Spec and commercial buffer tubes are two different types that are commonly used in firearms.

✔️ Mil-Spec buffer tubes are made to strict military specifications and are used by the US military and law enforcement agencies.

📏 They have a diameter of 1.148 inches and have a slightly thicker wall compared to commercial.

🔘 Mil-Spec tubes have a smooth surface without any external markings.

✔️ Commercial, on the other hand, are designed for civilian use and are made to less stringent specifications.

📏 They have a diameter of 1.168 inches and have a thinner wall compared to Mil-Spec.

🔘 Commercial – may have external markings and a textured surface.

♻️ The primary difference between them is

  • ➔ their compatibility with other components of the firearm. ➔ Mil-Spec are only compatible with Mil-Spec buttstocks, while commercial are only compatible with commercial buttstocks. 🛑 Mixing and matching Mil-Spec and commercial buffer tubes and buttstocks can lead to compatibility issues and may cause malfunctions.

🔔 In summary, while Mil-Spec and commercial tubes may look similar, they are designed for different applications and have different compatibility requirements. ⚠️ It is important to choose the appropriate buffer tube for your firearm to ensure proper function and reliability.

1️⃣ Make sure the firearm is unloaded and the magazine is removed.
2️⃣ Remove the existing buttstock and buffer tube assembly from the rifle. This may involve loosening and removing the castle nut and end plate, then sliding the tube and buffer/spring assembly out of the lower receiver.
3️⃣ Install the new tube in the lower receiver by sliding it into the channel and aligning the indexing point with the appropriate slot or notch.
4️⃣ Install the castle nut and tighten it down with a castle nut wrench.
5️⃣ Install the end plate onto the tube and tighten it down with a wrench or pliers.
6️⃣ Insert the buffer and spring assembly into the new buffer tube, making sure they are aligned and seated properly.
7️⃣ Install the new buttstock, aligning any indexing points or pins and tightening the attachment screws or locking mechanism.
8️⃣ Confirm that the new tube and buttstock are securely attached and function properly, then conduct a function test to ensure the rifle cycles and fires safely and reliably.

FAQ 🤔

What is the best buffer tube kit?
💁🏽 Ultimately, the best kit for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences, as well as the type of firearm you are using.

🔎 When selecting, consider the quality of the materials used, the fit and finish of the components, and the reliability and durability of the kit. 📍 Some popular brands include Aero Precision, Magpul, Spike’s Tactical, and BCM.

👍🏻 It’s always a good idea to do research, read reviews, and consult with experts or other firearm enthusiasts to help make an informed decision.

Are buffer tubes legal?
✅ Buffer tubes are a common component of semi-automatic or automatic firearms and are legal in many countries, including the United States. ⚠️ However, it’s important to note that the laws and regulations regarding firearms and firearm components vary from country to country and even from state to state within a country.

What is a buffer tube used for?
  • 1️⃣ A buffer tube is an important component of a semi-automatic or automatic firearm that helps to control the recoil of the weapon and ensure its proper function.
  • 2️⃣ Specifically, it houses the buffer spring and buffer, which work together ➜ to absorb the energy generated by the firing of a round and then transfer it back into the firearm’s bolt carrier group, causing it to move backward and cycle the next round into the chamber.
  • 3️⃣ It also provides a mounting point for the buttstock of the firearm ➜ allowing the shooter to properly shoulder the weapon and maintain a stable shooting platform.
How often should I change the buffer tube?
🚀 The buffer tube of a firearm is a durable component that should last for many years with proper maintenance and use.

  • 💡 In general, if the tube is functioning properly and shows no signs of damage or wear, there is no need to replace it on a regular schedule.
  • ⛔️ However, if you are experiencing any issues with the performance of your firearm, such as erratic cycling or excessive recoil, it may be worth considering a replacement of the buffer tube as part of the troubleshooting and maintenance process.
What are the different types of buffer tubes?
🔎 There are 3️⃣ different types:

  • 🔵 Mil-Spec are the standard size for most AR-15s and are what you will find on most rifles that are built from scratch. 📏 They measure 1.148” in diameter and are 7” long.
  • 🔵 Commercial Spec are slightly larger in diameter than Mil-Spec Buffer Tubes. 📏 They measure 1.170” in diameter and are also 7” long.

⇢ These tubes are not as common as Mil-Spec, but they will work with any stock designed to fit a Mil-Spec ones.

  • 🔵 Buffer Tubes for AR Pistol are shorter than both Mil-Spec and Commercial-Spec. 📏They measure 1.148” in diameter and are only 4.7” long.

⇢ Tubes for AR Pistol are designed for use with “Arm Braces” which attach to the tube and provide support for the shooter’s arm when firing an AR Pistol.

Just like everyone else, I started out with the OG SB brace. Nowadays, it’s chillin’ on my Mossberg Shockwave. I rocked the KAK Shockwave braces for a hot minute, probably a couple of years or so. I still have like 4 or 5 of them lying around. Then I got my hands on the SB-mini, which I threw on my Glock 17 MOS. But I gotta say, my absolute fave so far has gotta be the SBA3. I got it about five months ago, and it’s still holding up strong. That QD mount is in the perfect spot for me, so I think I’m gonna stick with it.

As for me, the SBA4 and Tailhook Mod 2 braces are the top choices among available brace options

Yeap, my love is the Tailhook Mod 1 and SBPDW braces, with the latter being my top choice due to its exceptional performance. If you haven’t had the chance to try it out, I highly recommend it, despite its relatively high price point. I also find the Doublestar Strongarm to be an excellent option, as it is made entirely of aluminum, is compact, has a low profile, and features a QD cup on all four sides

Guys, I would recommend trying out the Tailhook Mod 2 pistol brace, as it is a more robust option that does not require the use of Velcro. It has become my go-to choice for all of my builds, and I prefer it over other brace options.

Hey, will the short buffer work with an 8.5-inch 300blk setup?

✅ It is possible that the short buffer will work with an 8.5-inch 300blk setup, ⚠️ but the optimal buffer length may depend on several factors such as the weight of the bolt carrier group, gas system length, and ammunition used.
🔰 In general, a shorter buffer is typically used with shorter barrel lengths and pistol-length gas systems to ensure proper function and reduce recoil.

🔔 However, it is always recommended to consult the manufacturer’s specifications and recommendations for your specific setup to ensure proper function and safety.

In my experience, the KAK shockwave is pretty dope, especially for a minimalistic or PDW setup. The only issue I’ve had is that it can be a bit tricky to adjust, and if you’re not careful, you might accidentally yank it off the tube completely while fiddling with it. The SBA3, on the other hand, doesn’t have any of these problems and uses a regular carbine tube (although some folks might argue that it could be a legal issue – but hey, that’s on the manufacturers since they sold it for use on pistol carbine tubes). Overall, I’d say the SBA3 is the better choice.

I got the buffer tube from Strikes Industries and it’s dope! Looks sick and performs like a champ. Works even better with the enhanced end plate and fixed stabilizer. It was worth waiting for, glad I snagged it.

I’ve been using the Bravo company buffer tube for several months now. works perfectly. easy to install and has noticeably reduced recoil, I would buy it again without hesitations.

⭕️ Yes, buffer tube length can matter for proper function and compatibility with your specific firearm setup.

⚠️ It is important to note that using the wrong buffer tube length can cause compatibility issues, affect the reliability of your firearm, and potentially cause safety issues.
