Best 357 Sig Ammo

What is 357 Sig Ammo? 🔰

It is a popular pistol calibre ammunition cartridge developed by SIG Sauer in 1994. It was created to provide improved performance out of short-barreled handguns and became popular with law enforcement agencies because it has a higher muzzle velocity than most other handgun calibres.

Types 🌐

Hollow Point bullets are designed to expand upon impact, creating a larger wound channel in the target.

  • 📌 This type of ammunition is favoured by many law enforcement officers and self-defence users due to its stopping power.
  • 📌 However, HP rounds may not penetrate deeply enough to reach vital organs or cause significant damage to bones.
  • 📌 Furthermore, Hollow Points often fail to penetrate barriers such as car doors or walls.

Full Metal Jacket rounds are designed for more targeted use.

  • 📌 FMJ bullets offer superior penetration capabilities and can easily pass through barriers and ricochet off hard surfaces with minimal deformation or loss of energy.
  • 📌 They are preferred by competitive shooters or those who need greater accuracy from their ammo at greater distances because of their predictable trajectories.
  • 📌 While FMJ bullets still cause injury upon impact, they do not typically expand on contact like Hollow Points do and may lack sufficient stopping power for self-defence scenarios.

Reloading 🔌

🛠 Basic supplies: brass cases, bullets, primers, powder, and a press. You can purchase these items separately or in kit form from various online retailers.

🧷 Begin by separating the brass cases into different containers based on brand and age. This will make them easier to find when needed later in the process.

🧷 Next, inspect each case for defects or signs of damage before starting to load them with powder. Using a case gauge or comparator tool makes this step much easier and more accurate than using just your eyes alone.

🧷 Move on to priming them with primer caps. Primers come in two sizes: standard large rifle primers or small pistol primers specific to the 357 Sig cartridge size.

🧷 When loading with powder, use only those recommended by both your ammunition manufacturer and gun manufacturer as some combinations may produce higher levels of pressure than your firearm was designed for – potentially resulting in serious injury if fired inaccurately due to overpressurization.

🧷 Finally, seat your bullets into each case neck ensuring that they are seated deeply enough both for accuracy and safety concerns.

Storage 🎯

✅ 1) Make sure to choose a secure storage area that’s away from any external heat sources or potential hazards. It should also be free from moisture, as moisture can cause corrosion in your ammunition over time.

✅ 2) Store in its original boxes if possible — this will not only help protect the ammunition but also label them by calibre and load type for easy access.

✅ 3) Keep your ammunition out of the reach of children and make sure to store your guns and ammo separately. Gun safes are great for larger collections, while smaller containers like ammo cans work well for smaller amounts of ammunition.

✅ 4) Pay attention to expiration dates — most manufacturers put expiration dates on their ammunition boxes. If you’re unsure about an expiration date, it’s best to dispose of the ammunition safely rather than risk using outdated rounds in your firearm.

✅ 5) Finally, always practice proper gun safety and handling when working with any type of firearm or ammunition. This includes wearing eye protection and never pointing a gun at anything you don’t intend to shoot.

FAQ 📡

What is the best bullet weight for the 357 SIG?

The best bullet weight for the 357 SIG depends on a variety of factors, such as the type of gun you are using, your shooting style and what you intend to use the ammunition for.

Generally speaking, the most popular bullet weights for this calibre range from 125 to 147 grains.

🔎 A heavier bullet (147 grain) with a slower velocity is considered to be more accurate when targeting short and mid-range distances, while lighter bullets (125 grain) offer higher velocities and flatter trajectories when used in longer ranges.

🔎 For self-defence purposes, many people prefer 120-grain hollow point bullets since they are designed to expand upon impact and penetrate deeply into the target.

Is 357 SIG a powerful round?

The 357 SIG round has been described as a powerful round that is well-suited for self-defence and law enforcement applications. It was developed by Swiss ammunition manufacturer SIG Sauer in 1994 and is based on the .40 S&W cartridge case shortened to the length of a 9mm Parabellum cartridge. The name “SIG” stands for “SIG Sauer”.

✅ The 357 SIG features a slightly larger bullet diameter compared to the 9mm Parabellum, making it slightly more powerful than its predecessor.

✅ This increased power gives 357 SIG ammunition better performance when used in shorter barrels, like those found on many concealed carry handguns.

✅ In addition, the 357 SIG has an impressive muzzle velocity—it’s capable of producing over 1,400 feet per second of energy from a 4.5” barrel, resulting in greater accuracy at longer distances.

Is 357 SIG as powerful as 357 Magnum?

357 SIG ammunition is a powerful calibre, but it is not quite as powerful as 357 Magnum ammunition.

⭕ The primary difference lies in the cartridge size; 357 SIG ammo has a smaller diameter than its magnum counterpart, which means it carries less powder. This leads to a lower muzzle velocity and less kinetic energy at the target.

🔋 The 357 SIG round does have several advantages over the 357 Magnum rounds for self-defence purposes.

  • For starters, it has a flatter trajectory than the magnum round, which makes it easier to shoot at longer distances.
  • It also has slightly less felt recoil and less muzzle blast than the magnum round, making it more pleasant to shoot.
  • Additionally, the shorter length of 357 SIG cases makes them slightly easier to reload than their magnum counterparts.
What is the highest velocity 357 SIG ammo?
Factory loads across all major brands offer similar muzzle velocities in the 1,200 to 1,300fps range. Therefore, it’s ultimately up to personal preference when selecting your favourite brand and grain size combination.
Is 357 SIG good for self-defence?

It is a popular choice for self-defence, as it has enough stopping power to be effective in most situations.

  • 🌐 It has become increasingly popular among law enforcement officers and other users looking for more powerful rounds.
  • 🌐 It is also capable of penetrating most body armour and can penetrate deep into an assailant’s body, making it the ideal round for self-defence.
  • 🌐 Additionally, it has a flat trajectory which allows shooters to make accurate shots with greater ease than many other rounds.

I’m a frequent shooter of .40 S&W, but lately I’ve been trying out the .357 sig at my local range and it’s simply amazing. It has less recoil than what I’m used to, plus its flatter bullet trajectory makes long-range shooting much easier. Despite this, my only worry is whether or not there could be too much overpenetration from these rounds. However, with boxes costing just $30 more than their .40 counterparts at my gun shop – price isn’t an issue for me!

Though the .357 sig offers outstanding ballistics, it also has several drawbacks. The most notable are a marginal increase in performance accompanied by reduced capacity and muzzle flip when compared to other calibers. If you consistently practice your shooting skills however, then these trade-offs may not be as detrimental.

Hello! Thank you for the information. I have a little question – when I formed the neck and shoulder using the 357 steel die, do I need to use case lube to ensure a smooth running process?

When reloading 357 Sig ammunition, it is recommended to use case lube when running the brass through the 357 steel die in order to form the neck and shoulder.
🚩 The lubrication prevents potential sticking or sticking of the brass in the die, which can cause damage to the brass or even worse, an unsafe round.
🚩 Applying a thin layer of case lube on the outside of each piece of brass prior to sizing will allow for smoother cycling through the die and also reduce wear on both your dies and shells.
🚩 Additionally, using a quality lube like Hornady One Shot Case Lube or Dillon Precision Super Lube will help ensure that there is no build-up or residue in your dies from repeated use. This build-up can affect the accuracy of your reloads over time and should be avoided by properly cleaning your dies after every use.

Since I was a youth, the .357 Sig has been my firearm of selection. After it became my father’s favored sidearm in his police department, we opted to get one as well and that is how I educated myself on gun safety by shooting with this kind of pistol caliber.

If you’re looking for an affordable yet high-quality option, Fiocchi is your best bet. However, the price per box ranges from $29 to $39 and can be hard to come by.

I like this ammo. From good –  it is better than 9mm, .40, and maybe .45.
But – it is expensive

I’m ecstatic about the concept of this cartridge. If it were up to me, I would create a .30 version of the famous .357 SIG that has phenomenal velocity and accurate ballistics.
