Features 🔰
🎯 The .270 WSM is based on the .300 Winchester Short Magnum but downsized to use lighter bullets for greater accuracy at shorter distances.
🎯 When fired from a barrel of 24 inches, the .270 WSM can launch a 130-grain bullet at speeds of up to 3,420 fps. This provides users with maximum velocity and energy, making it an ideal choice for hunting most medium-sized games like deer, elk, and antelope.
🎯 The .270 WSM typically uses bullets that range from 90 to 150 grains and are capable of producing ballistic coefficients near or above .400, which helps them maintain their momentum over longer distances.
🎯 It provides reduced recoil compared to the standard .270 Winchester round and reduced power consumption compared to other magnum cartridges. This makes it easier on your shoulder as well as your wallet
Reloading 💡
🔥 Before you begin reloading .270 WSM rounds, there are some important things to consider.
- 📌First, it’s important to use quality components when building your loads as this will ensure that they perform correctly.
- 📌 High-quality brass cases are essential for ensuring consistent accuracy and reliability from shot to shot, so it’s worth investing in quality brass cases before you start loading.
- 📌 It’s also important to select the right powder for your load; choose one that produces acceptable pressures within the safety limits of your gun and will provide consistent performance across all temperature ranges.
- 📌 Similarly, selecting the correct bullet is also essential; choose one that performs well at your preferred range while maintaining accuracy at longer distances if needed.
- 📌 Finally, always double-check that all components are properly sized before seating them into the case – doing so will ensure the proper functioning of your firearm when shooting these reloaded rounds.
🔥 Once you’ve chosen all your components, it’s time to start reloading! The process generally follows the same steps regardless of which calibre you are reloading:
- 🧷 deprime the used brass cases then clean them by soaking them in hot water with dishwashing liquid; size each case using a die set specifically designed for .270 WSM;
- 🧷 charge each case with powder using either a manual or automated dispenser;
- 🧷 seat bullets using either pre-made seating dies or custom dies created by hand;
- 🧷 crimp each round by running them through another die set specially designed for this purpose;
- 🧷 lastly inspect each round thoroughly before storing them or loading them into magazines for use on the range or out in the field.
🔥 Reloading ammo may seem daunting at first but with practice comes confidence – not only will you have access to more affordable ammo but you’ll also have complete control over every component used so you can tailor each load exactly how you want it!

How to Store .270 Winchester Short Magnum Ammo? 📻
🧨 Your ammunition should be kept away from extreme temperatures, moisture, dust and dirt, as these can damage the cartridges and reduce their accuracy and performance.
🧨 Additionally, you should keep them in a secure location away from children and other unauthorized individuals.
🧨 The optimal temperature to store .270 Winchester Short Magnum ammo is between 65-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Excessive heat or cold can cause an increase in the pressure inside the cartridge case, leading to premature detonation or failure to fire when you need it most.

Moisture can cause corrosion on brass cases and lead bullets which could decrease accuracy or lead to malfunctions. Good information! Awesome post👏
Thank you for the comment
It’s a shame that Hornady discontinued these ( my friend said), I liked them. Your work is outstanding!
No. You can buy them. My father has been advocating for a Remington pump .270 since the early 80s, as its accuracy is unmatched in his eyes. A few years ago, my father-in-law gifted me with a Browning A-Bolt Medallion in .270 and it proved to be one of the most precise rifles I have ever shot; sending 130gr Hornady SST bullets through targets with remarkable precision!
Good content. How much do they cost?
The cost of .270 Winchester Short Magnum Ammo can vary depending on the type and brand of ammunition.
🔵 Generally, a box containing 20 rounds can range anywhere from $20 to $60 or more. The price may also depend on the amount of powder in each round and the quality standards involved in its manufacture.
The 270 is an incredible round! On the flip side, I wouldn’t want to be up against a bear with its young tagging along.
A .270 rifle could likely be used to kill a large bear with some effort, but it wouldn’t have the stopping power of other calibers. I personally switched my elk gun from a .300 magnum and never looked back. For any scenario involving trying to stop a bear, I would always choose the trusty 45/70 over either caliber mentioned before. That’s just my opinion though – hope everyone has an amazing day!
For almost half a century, I have relied on the 270 Winchester for my hunting needs. Although I’ve owned other calibers over that time period, none compare to this rifle’s potential and power – especially when reloading! As age caught up with me and hampered my vision slightly, I decided to switch from handloading ammo to buying commercial ammunition. Fortunately enough, Hornady’s 145 gr. ELD-X Hunter proved more than capable of replacing my previous home loads; in fact they surpass them in performance!Through my aging eyes and aching fingers, I can still precisely shoot three rounds into a 3/4″ circle at 100 yards – an impressive feat for me! This ammunition is ideal, providing outstanding accuracy. My grandfather initiated me to hunting with his 308 Winchester rifle while my father used an original K98 8MM Mauser during the time he hunted. As for myself, I have killed numerous white-tail deer and one Colorado 5×4 Bull Elk using the old 270 that has been by my side all these years. In addition, it’s also taken out plenty of javelinas, feral hogs, coyotes, turkeys and even some squirrels along the way! It truly hasn’t failed in delivering throughout its long career.
WOW!!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!!!
In my opinion, the .270 has been overlooked in recent times. This round is more powerful than many of its trendier counterparts, providing superior range and ballistics that are often overlooked.
Very informative and to the point, thank you for your article! Are .270 Winchester Short Magnum Ammo good for elk hunting?
Yes, .270 Winchester Short Magnum Ammo can be a great choice for elk hunting.
🟢 Its reliable accuracy, good ballistics and energy make it suitable for longer shots and heavier games.
🟢 It has enough power to take down big game like elk at the right range with proper shot placement.
My hunting buddy here in Texas is a master hunter. His .270 rifle has taken over 250 hogs, large mule deer and whitetail! The .270 makes short work of the animals – I’m so impressed with its success that I can’t argue against it. Even though my favoured weapon is a 308, the results speak for themselves when it comes to the 270’s efficiency.
My buddy bagged a massive elk with just one shot thanks to my Winchester xpr chambered in 270. It was the same rifle I had originally owned when I first started hunting, so it holds a special place in my heart!
Great about on the 270 Winchester. As I was growing up in Texas, it seemed like the 270 centerfire rifle cartridge came highly recommended.
My father was raised hunting in Wisconsin, and he purchased a 270 rifle that he assured me could take on any game animal across North America. He explained this weapon had exceptionally flat trajectory when fired, making it an ideal choice for long-range shots.
Hi! Are polymer-tipped bullets good?
Polymer-tipped bullets are gaining popularity among shooters as they are known to be more aerodynamic and provide increased accuracy.
🟠 For starters, polymer-tipped bullets offer improved ballistics due to their sleek design.
🟠 The bullet construction allows them to cut through the air more efficiently and retain energy better than standard lead-core rounds.
🟠 In addition, the tips also help increase stability in flight for better accuracy at longer distances. This makes them ideal for target shooting or hunting applications where precision matters most.
However, there are some drawbacks associated with these types of rounds when used with .270 Winchester Short Magnum Ammo.
🟡 One such downside is the reduced penetration due to their lightweight and low sectional density. So while they may offer superior accuracy, they may not have enough stopping power for hunting large game animals at close range or even smaller games at further distances.
🟡 Furthermore, if you’re looking for maximum expansion, polymer tips won’t necessarily offer that either since their larger surface area often causes them to fragment on impact rather than expand like traditional hollow point designs.
When it comes to achieving successful hunting, the performance of bullets in relation to their positioning is paramount. The 270 round has proven itself time and again as an excellent option; your post was particularly impressive!
Over the years, I strayed from my first love – a .270 rifle. Instead, opting for 30 calibre magnums and eventually to a .35 Whelen that I adore! However, this past year saw me return to the comfort of my beloved .270. It allows me all of the killing power without any sacrifice on kickback as some larger calibres ask you to. My pride has been further ensued since being able to hit steel at 650 yards with my trusty Browning BAR chambered in 270! So here we are a full circle – loving both weapons equally and embracing their true capabilities no matter what level they’re set at.
The .270 is a seriously underrated round that often receives less attention than other trendy cartridges. Its range and ballistics are actually quite impressive when compared to some of its counterparts!
We totally agree. Thank you for the comment
