Can a muzzle brake be removed?

If you have a screw-on muzzle brake, you can unscrew it.

If you have a clamp-on muzzle brake, you can loosen the screws or bolts that hold it in place. Be careful not to lose any small screws or bolts! Some muzzle brakes are also held in place by set screws that may require an Allen wrench or other tool to tighten/loosen.

Here are some tips:

  • Unload the weapon completely. Remove the magazine and visually check the chamber for any ammunition.
  • Position the weapon in a padded gun vise so that the sights are facing up. Then, lock down the vise.
  • You’ll find the roll pins next to the scope on the brake if there are any.
  • If you find that the brake is stuck, heat it up with a propane torch for 30 seconds. This will make the metal expand, thereby making it easier to remove any pins. Additionally, this will loosen any adhesives used on bolts.

Once the muzzle brake is removed, be sure to clean the threads of the barrel and recheck for any remaining debris before reassembling.

There are a few ways to remove a muzzle brake:

  • One is to use a vise-grip or locking pliers to grip the brake and then twist it off.
  • Another is to use a wrench to grip the brake and then turn it off.
  • A third way is to use an impact driver, which will quickly and easily remove the brake.

Be sure to wear eye protection when using any of these methods, as filings and debris may fly off the brake when it’s removed.

Typically you can use a vise block and then use a pipe wrench or crowbar to unscrew it.

Another way to do it is to drill out the pins that hold it in place and then remove them with a hammer and chisel. Finally, you can cut off the threads with a cutoff wheel.

Whichever way you choose, be sure to wear safety goggles, gloves, and appropriate clothing.

There are usually two set screws that need to be removed in order to take off the muzzle brake. You will need a hex wrench to remove these screws. Once the screws are removed, the muzzle brake should slide right off.
