What is a 1911 holster? 🧐

It is a type of gun holster, specifically designed for the Colt M1911 semi-automatic pistol. Also known as a Government Model or simply “1911”, this popular weapon has been in production since before World War I and remains in use today.

Features 📝

  • 💥 Material: The material of the holster is crucial to both comfort and durability. Most holsters are made of leather, nylon, or Kydex.
  • 💥 Retention: Retention refers to how tightly the holster holds your 1911 pistol in place. The best holsters strike a balance between retention and ease of access, so you can quickly and safely draw your weapon when needed.
  • 💥 Design: Some holsters feature an open-top design for easy access, while others have a thumb break or other retention mechanism to keep the gun secure.
  • 💥 Comfort: A comfortable holster is critical, especially if you plan on wearing it for extended periods.
  • 💥 Concealment: If you plan to carry your 1911 concealed, look for a holster that is designed for that purpose. These holsters are typically made to sit snugly against your body and have a low profile to avoid printing or revealing the presence of your firearm.
  • 💥 Versatility: The best holsters are versatile and can be worn in various carry positions, including inside the waistband (IWB), outside the waistband (OWB), and appendix carry.

Benefits 🔥

Carrying a 1911 firearm comes with a lot of responsibility, and choosing the right holster is part of that. Here are some benefits:

  • 🔷 Safety: A well-designed holster is essential for safety, not only for the shooter but also for those around them. A good holster will keep the firearm secure and prevent accidental discharges.
  • 🔷 Easy Accessibility: Having it allows for quick and easy access to the firearm in case of an emergency. A good holster should provide a smooth draw and easy access to the trigger.
  • 🔷 Comfort: Carrying a firearm for extended periods can be uncomfortable, but choosing the right holster can make a big difference. It will distribute the weight of the firearm evenly and prevent hotspots or chafing.
  • 🔷 Concealment: This can help to conceal the firearm and prevent printing, which could give away its presence. This is especially important for those who carry a firearm for self-defense or in situations where open carry is not allowed.

Benefits of 1911 holster

How to make a leather holster not so tight? 🤔

If you’re searching for the best 1911 holster, you’re not alone. It’s a popular gun that has been around for over a century, and a good holster is crucial for both safety and comfort. But what do you do if your new leather holster is too tight?

⌛️ Firstly, it’s important to understand why it is tight. Leather holsters are made from natural materials, and they will naturally mold to the shape of your gun over time. However, when they are new, they can be tighter than expected. This is because leather is usually treated with oils and waxes, making it feel denser and stiffer. Additionally, the stitching and design of the holster can also affect the fit.

💡 Here are some tips for making it more comfortable:

  • 🧩 Wear your holster around the house: The more you wear it, the quicker it will loosen up. Start by wearing it around the house for a few hours a day. This will gradually stretch the leather and make it more comfortable.
  • 🧩 Use leather conditioner: Leather conditioner softens and nourishes the leather, making it more flexible. Apply the conditioner to the inside and outside of your holster and rub it in with a soft cloth.
  • 🧩 Use a hairdryer: Use a hairdryer on low heat to warm up the leather around the areas that need to be stretched. Once the leather is warm, use your hand or a tool to pull and stretch the areas that are too tight.

How to choose it? 🔍

Choosing the right holster for your 1911 is a critical decision that can affect the performance and safety of your firearm. Here are some important factors to consider:

Material – The material used in making the holster is a crucial consideration.

  • ➡️ Leather holsters are widely preferred because of their durability, water resistance, and stylish design. They may take some time to get used to but feel comfortable with time.
  • ➡️ Polymer, nylon, and Kydex holsters are other popular options due to their lightness, ruggedness, and ease of maintenance. They provide a secure fit, minimal wear, and positive retention while minimizing shock to 1911.

Retention – Retention describes how well the holster protects the 1911 and keeps it secure while carrying.

  • ➡️ The type of retention system can be active or passive. Active retention systems rely on retention straps, thumb snaps, or triggers, while passive systems use pressure retention from the holster itself to keep 1911 secure.

Design – The design of the holster determines how comfortable and secure it will be during use.

  • ➡️ To achieve this, consider designs such as shoulder, ankle, belt, and chest holsters that provide different levels of comfort, accessibility, and concealment based on your activity.

Level of Concealment – The level of concealment is an essential aspect when choosing the best holster.

  • ➡️ If you plan to carry concealed, choose a holster that offers good concealment without affecting accessibility or retention. Holsters such as concealed belts, and ankle, or shoulder holsters are best for discreet carry, while open belt holsters are for general use.

Price – Price is a crucial consideration when choosing the holster. The price should reflect the quality and durability of the holster.

  • ➡️ Don’t go for the cheapest option if you want to get a product that lasts longer and performs optimally. Invest in holsters that are versatile, of excellent quality, and within your budget.

FAQ 🤠

What is the best position to carry 1911?

🟦 There are a few positions that are commonly recommended for carrying 1911.

  • 🔶 One popular option is carrying in the strong-side hip position, also known as the 3 o’clock position. This allows for a quick and easy draw with your dominant hand and keeps the firearm close to your body for maximum concealment. However, this position may not be comfortable for everyone, especially if you are seated for long periods.
  • 🔶 Another option is carrying in the appendix position, which is in the front of your body near your waistband. This position allows for quick access to your firearm with either hand and is a popular choice for those who want maximum control over their firearm. However, this position requires a holster that is specifically designed for appendix carry and may not be comfortable for everyone, especially if you have a larger stomach.
  • 🔶 If you prefer to carry your less visible position visible, you may want to consider carrying it in the small of your back or the ankle position. The small of your back position, or the 6 o’clock position, is a popular choice for those who want to keep their firearm hidden from view, but it can be uncomfortable when sitting or driving.

😉 Ultimately, the best position to carry a 1911 will depend on your personal preference and comfort level.

How are holsters worn?

➡️ Holsters are worn in a variety of ways depending on the type of holster, the firearm being carried, and personal preference. Here are some of the most common ways that holsters are worn:

  • Outside the waistband (OWB) – This is a popular choice for open carry or concealed carry with a jacket or other outer garment. The holster is attached to the outside of the waistband with a belt loop or paddle, and the firearm is carried on the hip or back.
  • Inside the waistband (IWB) – It’s good for concealed carry, as the holster is worn inside the waistband of pants or shorts. The holster is typically attached to the belt with a clip or loop, and the firearm is carried on the hip or back.
  • Shoulder holsters – These holsters are worn over the shoulders and under the arms, with the firearm carried on the side or back. They are popular with law enforcement and those who spend much time sitting, as they are comfortable when seated.
  • Ankle holsters – These holsters are worn on the ankle, with the firearm carried on the inside or outside of the ankle. They are a popular choice for those who want to carry a backup firearm, as they are easily accessible when seated or on the ground.
  • Pocket holsters – These holsters are designed to be worn in a pocket, with the firearm carried in the pocket of pants or a jacket. They are a popular choice for those who want to carry a small firearm, as they are easily concealed and accessible.
Is 1911 a good everyday carry?

🤔 1911 is a classic design that has been around for over a century, and it remains a popular choice for many gun owners. But is it a good choice for everyday carry? Here are some factors:

  • ✳️ Size and weight – 1911 is a full-sized handgun, which means it is relatively large and heavy compared to other popular carry guns.
  • ✳️ Capacity – The standard capacity is typically 7-8 rounds, which is lower than many other modern handguns.
  • ✳️ Maintenance – 1911 is a relatively complex design, with many small parts and a requirement for regular maintenance to ensure reliable operation.

👍 Despite these considerations, many gun owners still choose to carry 1911 as their everyday carry gun. The 1911’s reputation for reliability and accuracy, combined with its classic design and iconic status, make it a popular choice for many.

What is the safest holster position?

📌 Choosing a safe holster position is crucial for anyone who carries a firearm regularly. Here are some of the safest holster positions and their pros and cons:

  • 🔥 Strong Side Hip Carry – This position involves carrying the firearm on the strong side hip, either inside or outside the waistband. It is a popular choice for its accessibility and ease of drawing and allows the user to maintain positive control of the firearm at all times. However, it can be more difficult to conceal depending on the size of the firearm.
  • 🔥 Small of the Back Carry – This position involves carrying the firearm on the small of the back, either inside or outside the waistband. It is a popular choice for those who prefer to carry in a more concealed position but can be uncomfortable when sitting for long periods.
  • 🔥 Cross Draw Carry – This position involves carrying the firearm on the opposite side of the body, typically in front of the hip. It can be a comfortable option for those who prefer to carry on their non-dominant side but can be more difficult to draw from quickly.

➡️ Ultimately, the safest holster position will depend on a variety of factors, including the user’s individual preferences, body type, and the type of firearm being carried.

What is the best angle for a holster?

🟣 The best angle for a holster can vary depending on the user’s individual preferences, body type, and the type of firearm being carried. However, there are a few common angles that are popular:

  • 🔰 Zero-Degree Cant – This angle positions the firearm straight up and down, perpendicular to the ground. It is a popular choice for those who prefer a more traditional, vertical draw, and can be a good option for larger, full-size firearms.
  • 🔰 Forward Cant – This angle positions the firearm at a slight forward angle, typically between 5 and 15 degrees. It is a popular choice for those who want a faster, more natural draw, as it allows the user to clear the holster more quickly.
  • 🔰 Reverse Cant – This angle positions the firearm at a slight backward angle, typically between 5 and 15 degrees. It is a popular choice for those who want a more aggressive, tactical look, and can be a good option for those who carry in the small of-the-back position.

😀 Ultimately, the best angle for a holster will depend on the user’s individual needs and preferences, as well as the type of firearm being carried.

Hey there, I’m looking for recommendations on a holster to conceal carry my 5″ 1911. I currently have a belly band, but it’s not as quick to draw as my SCCY EDC in an IWB holster. I’m hoping to find a more comfortable and efficient holster option that will allow me to easily conceal my 1911 while still being able to draw it quickly if needed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I carry a full-size 1911 comfortably at the 5 o’clock position with a forward cant and an untucked shirt. I have tried several forward-leaning holsters but I like the Scorpus Model M24 Holster.

I carry a 5.5″ 1911 and for everyday carry, I prefer leather holsters. The one I’ve been using for the last five years is a DeSantis Mini Scabbard Belt Holster. This holster has been incredibly comfortable for me every day, no matter what I’m doing, except when lying under a car for an extended period.

I have been carrying my Glock 19 for years, but I recently fell in love with the classic tank-like 1911. I am now on the lookout for a good concealment holster for it, specifically an inside-the-belt holster.

As someone who has carried full-size handguns, I tend to prefer combat commanders. These are all-steel, full-size frames with slightly shorter slides. For all my bigger guns, I use hybrid holsters as they offer greater comfort. My new Comp-Tac MTAC Inside The Waistband Hybrid Concealed Carry Holster is by far the most comfortable. Hybrid holsters do an excellent job of distributing weight across your hip, instead of putting it all in one spot. I’ve found they’re also less likely to slide around in my waistband if I have to move around a lot.

I recently purchased my first handgun, a Springfield Armory Loaded Lightweight Operator, and I’m looking for a holster to use with it. I plan on using the gun mainly for the range with the possibility of using it for CCW. Do you have any recommendations or thoughts on what type of holster I should go for?

I’ve personally had great experiences with hybrid holsters. I’ve used it for minimizing printing and retaining the firearm after making adjustments at the 3:30-4 o’clock position, my top pick would have to be Comp-Tac MTAC Inside The Waistband Hybrid Concealed Carry Holster.

I’m looking for a Kydex holster that can be used for range shooting, casual-level competitions, and possibly backpacking. I already own Vedder holsters and like them for my other guns, but I need a new one that can fit a full-size 1911. I’m hoping to hear from others who have experience with this type of holster and can recommend a good brand or model.

I was recently gifted a Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle Holster and I am loving it so far. It’s perfect for my main use, which is range and camping. The thumb retention is a nice feature.

I have an STI Lawman 5.0 and I’m searching for a leather OWB holster to wear while I’m out on the ranch. I’m aware of Galco, but I was hoping to discover a more distinctive option.

I use a DeSantis Mini Scabbard Belt Holster for my 1911 and I am satisfied with its performance. It stays in place and it is comfortable to wear. Overall, I recommend it.
