How does it work? ♻️
⚫️ A choke for slugs typically has an open or slightly constricted bore that allows the slug to pass through without being squeezed or deformed. This design helps to maintain the slug’s shape and improves its accuracy when fired.
⚪️ The choke’s constriction, or lack thereof, allows the slug to travel through the barrel without being restricted or slowed down. This is different from a traditional choke, which is designed to constrict the shot as it exits the barrel, creating a tighter shot pattern.
⚫️ In addition to the bore design, the choke may also have a shorter or ported barrel to reduce weight and improve maneuverability. It may also have adjustable sights or a scope mount to improve accuracy.
➡️ Overall, it is designed to optimize the performance of slug ammunition by providing a smooth bore and other features that improve accuracy and ease of use.

Types 💡
Based on the results of our research, we can figure out several types of chokes for slugs. 📝 Here are some of the most common:
- ⚙️ A cylinder bore choke has no constriction and provides a wide-open bore. This allows the slug to pass through the barrel without being squeezed or deformed, resulting in improved accuracy.
- ⚙️ An improved cylinder choke has a slight constriction that provides a small amount of spin to the slug as it exits the barrel. This spin helps stabilize the slug in flight, improving accuracy at longer ranges.
- ⚙️ A rifled choke has a series of spiral grooves cut into the bore that provides a spinning motion to the slug. The spinning motion helps to stabilize the slug in flight and improve accuracy at longer ranges.
- ⚙️ A sabot slug choke is designed specifically for use with sabot slugs, which are encased in a plastic jacket. This type of choke has a tighter constriction than other chokes and is designed to strip away the plastic jacket as the slug exits the barrel, leaving only the lead projectile to fly through the air.
- ⚙️ An adjustable choke allows the user to change the constriction of the choke to suit the specific type of slug being used or the distance to the target. It can be a useful feature for shooters who use a variety of slug types or who need to adjust their shooting based on the conditions.

I am thoroughly impressed and satisfied with Carlson’s Tactical muzzle device. After trying out various types of muzzle devices, chokes, and brakes for my rifles and shotguns, this one stands out as a top performer. I have mounted it on my JTS semi-automatic AK shotgun and the results are outstanding. This device has surpassed my expectations and I highly recommend it
Greetings,
I recently purchased 2 3/4 inch slugs for my Baikal IZH-27 shotgun and I’m curious about the minimum choke size that I should use with them. I’m concerned about the potential risk of injury or damage to my chokes or eyebrows if I use an unsuitable choke. Therefore, I would like to ensure that I make a safe choice. Thank you for your help.
Theoretically, a more open choke should provide better accuracy when firing slugs, but in practice, it’s best to test various slugs and chokes to determine what works best for your specific firearm.
For instance, my first slug gun had a fixed full choke on a 20-gauge pump. It shot Winchester “rifled” slugs very accurately, but it struggled with Federal and Remington slugs. However, when I found a barrel with screw-in chokes, the Federals and Remingtons shot adequately with an Improved Cylinder choke, while the Winchester slugs weren’t any better than the others but still shot well with the fixed Full choke. I used that fixed choke barrel as my slug gun for two decades until I purchased a rifled barrel for a different firearm.
I should also mention that Federal Tru-Ball slugs have been at least adequate in the several guns I have used them in. While they may not be the most precise option, they have all been accurate as far as a standard slug will shoot.
🔐 Typically, rifled slugs like the ones you have purchased are designed to be fired through an open or cylinder choke. This is because the slug itself has to rifle on the outside of the projectile that stabilizes it as it travels through the air and down the barrel, so there is no need for the constriction of a choke to control the spread.
🛑 In fact, using a choke tighter than open or cylinder with a slug can potentially damage the shotgun’s barrel and even cause injury to the shooter due to increased pressure buildup. Therefore, it’s important to make sure that you only use an open or cylinder choke with your 2 3/4-inch slugs.
💎 However, it’s always best to consult the owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer of your shotgun for specific recommendations on the appropriate choke size to use with slugs. They can provide more detailed and accurate information based on the specific model of your shotgun.
Hope this information is helpful!😉
I found that the Carlsons modified choke is a perfect fit for my Montefeltro shotgun. It has proven to be versatile and reliable, performing well at the range for clays as well as in the field for the game. I am pleased with its all-around performance as it patterns well with both target and field loads. I have even used it for the dove and upland game with excellent results. Despite the high number of rounds fired through it, the choke still looks new and shows no signs of wear.
I recently purchased Carlson’s tactical choke and installed it into my new JTS M12AK T1 12GA shotgun. The choke not only enhances the appearance of my firearm, giving it a fierce and intimidating look, but it also performs exceptionally well. I’m extremely satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend this product to others.
I recently brought my 25-year-old Mossberg 500 back to life by replacing its extractors, extractor springs, firing pin and spring, and mag spring. I also upgraded its furniture with some sleek Magpul parts to replace the old, cracked buttstock. To top it all off, I purchased the Brownells/Carlsons 3-gun tube choke set, which has proven to be an excellent value and of superior quality. The chokes are rated for steel up to bb size and a velocity of no more than 1550 fps. The finish is flawless, and the extended choke feature is a nice touch, adding 2 inches of barrel length and making it easy to swap chokes. The set includes IC, Mod, and Full chokes, which is more than sufficient for my needs. I’m thrilled with my purchase. Great review
Acquired a 20-gauge shotgun and, with buckshot in high demand, I’ve decided to try slugs for deer season. I’m not entirely sure whether I should remove the choke or leave it in place, and I don’t want to make a mistake. The slugs I have are Federal 20-gauge rifled hollow points. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
🎉 Congratulations on your new 20-gauge shotgun!
🔎 In general, it’s recommended to remove the choke from shotguns that have interchangeable chokes and use improved cylinder or cylinder bore choke for smoothbore barrels, as this will give the slug enough room to travel through the barrel without being too constricted. However, if your shotgun has a fixed choke, it may be better to leave it in place and test the slugs to see if the pattern well.
💣 As for the Federal 20-gauge rifled hollow point slugs you have, they are designed to be used in smoothbore barrels and will work well with or without a choke. Be sure to practice at the range to get comfortable with the slug’s trajectory and the shotgun’s accuracy, and follow all safety guidelines and hunting regulations.
⚠️ Remember that using slugs can produce significant recoil, so be prepared for that as well. Good luck with your deer season!
The Trulock Choke brake is an excellent choice for tactical and law enforcement shotgun users. While it may not significantly reduce recoil, it is highly effective for entryway deconstruction (formerly known as “breaching”) and serves as an outstanding standoff device. And its sleek appearance adds to its overall appeal.
I purchased a Remington 870 Express and had a great time shooting skeet with it yesterday. Tomorrow, I plan to take it to the range to shoot slugs. However, I’ve learned that the stock-modified choke may not be the best choice for this type of ammunition. Can you suggest which choke I should use instead?
For shooting rifled Foster slugs, try to use Cylinder, Skeet, or Improved Cylinder chokes. If you have all three, pattern your shotgun to determine which choke is most accurate. However, if you only have one, any of those three should suffice.
