How to Set a Ladder Tree Stand? 💡
🔨 Setting up a ladder tree stand can be a bit challenging, but with proper preparation and some basic tools, it can be done safely and efficiently. 👣 Here are the steps:
- 1️⃣ Choose a tree: Find a healthy, sturdy tree that is at least 10 inches in diameter and has a straight trunk. It should also be situated in a location that provides a clear view of the surrounding area and is close to game trails.
- 2️⃣ Assemble the ladder: Assemble the ladder according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to use all the necessary bolts and washers to ensure that the ladder is secure.
- 3️⃣ Lean the ladder against the tree: Carefully lean the ladder against the tree, making sure that it is straight and secure. Be sure to position the ladder so that it is perpendicular to the ground and the base is firmly on the ground.
- 4️⃣ Attach the ladder to the tree: Using ratchet straps or other sturdy straps, secure the ladder to the tree. Place the straps as high up on the ladder as possible and ensure that they are tight and secure.
- 5️⃣ Attach the platform: Attach the platform to the top of the ladder, using bolts and washers. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use all the necessary hardware.
- 6️⃣ Install the shooting rail: If the ladder tree stands come with a shooting rail, attach it to the platform according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- 7️⃣ Install the seat: Install the seat onto the platform using bolts and washers.
- 8️⃣ Stability test: Once everything is installed, test it for stability by gently shaking it back and forth. If it wobbles or seems unstable, repositions it or tighten the straps.
- 9️⃣ Climb onto the platform: Carefully climb onto the platform and sit in the seat to test it for comfort and stability. If everything feels secure and comfortable, you’re ready to start hunting!
⚠️ It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and take all necessary safety precautions when setting up a ladder tree stand. ⛓ Always wear a safety harness when climbing and using the stand, and be sure to inspect it for any signs of wear or damage before each use.

Greetings! I currently own a few older Big Game stands that I’m quite fond of. While I haven’t purchased any new ones recently, I do have a specific set of preferences when it comes to one-man stands. Specifically, I prefer stands with a sling-style flip seat and a large foot platform. I tend to experience vertigo when standing on a small platform at a great height and having to move around, so a spacious platform is crucial for my comfort. I’ve heard positive things about Muddy stands in this regard.
Hello there! I’ve been hunting for a few years but have never used a tree stand. Recently, my brother helped me set up my first one, an 18-foot ladder stand from Field and Stream. We followed the instructions and ratchet strapped it securely to the tree, and it feels rock solid. However, I noticed that the ladder is not perfectly straight up and down. Instead, it leans slightly into the tree, which makes it easier to climb and allows you to lean back into the tree for comfort and safety, according to my brother.
I’m wondering if this is normal or if I should try to adjust it. Should I undo the ratchet straps, have someone hold the ladder for me, and push it up slightly to straighten it out? Any advice would be appreciated.
I actually prefer a slight lean as well, as it makes me feel more comfortable. Just a tiny tilt in the direction of the tree can make a big difference in terms of stability and ease of use for me.
It’s worth noting that over time, the ladder feet may settle into the ground, which could cause the stand to lean in the opposite direction if it was set up perfectly straight. By having a slight lean towards the tree initially, you can help counteract this and ensure that the stand remains stable and secure over time.
I’m wondering if there are any options for a portable, lightweight ladder that can be easily set up in the field. Many of the trees I’m interested in using are too large to wrap a strap around, even with extensions, and screw-in steps are too time-consuming. Ideally, I’d like something that can be quickly and easily put up to a height of around 20 feet, so that I can hang my stand without too much hassle. Are there any products on the market that fit this description?
☑️ Yes, there are several options for portable and lightweight ladders that can be easily set up in the field.
1️⃣ One option to consider is a telescoping ladder, which can be extended to various heights and is compact and easy to transport.
2️⃣ Another option is a tripod stand ladder, which consists of a ladder attached to a tripod base and can be set up quickly and easily without the need to wrap straps or use screw-in steps.
3️⃣ Additionally, there are also several types of climbing sticks available on the market that can be used to create a ladder-like structure up the side of a tree. These sticks are lightweight and can be easily strapped to a backpack for transport. Some climbing sticks feature a quick-attach system that allows them to be easily secured to the tree without the need for straps or other equipment.
⚠️ Before purchasing any type of portable ladder or climbing system, it is important to ensure that it meets safety standards and is designed for the type of terrain and tree sizes you will be working with. 📝 Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and take appropriate safety precautions when using any type of tree stand or climbing system.
From my experience, the Walmart two-man ladder stands are a great value for the price.
This year, I purchased a Summit Dual Pro 2-man stand and I’m pleased with my purchase. Although I haven’t used it for hunting with two people yet, I appreciate the spacious platform and roomy two-person seat. Additionally, I own a Family Traditions 2-man stand which is also an excellent option, although it does come with a higher price tag. Overall, I think both stands are worth considering and provide great options for hunting with a partner.
I own a Millennium ladder stand, which is undoubtedly large and heavy and it comes with a hefty price tag. However, I believe it’s tough to find a more stable and comfortable option than this one. Despite its drawbacks, I consider it to be the gold standard in ladder stands
Millennium. Most comfortable stands on the market.
As I’ve gotten older (60y.o.), I could use some help when it comes to hanging my tree stands. I’ve come across various hoists that are designed to assist with this task and were curious if anyone has had any personal experience with them that they would be willing to share.
I’ll be 62 in November, and I’ve found that using loops of webbing made from old harnesses or safety belts (or purchased from an arborist supply store) can be incredibly helpful when hanging my tree stands. Once I’m securely strapped in at the top of my climbing stick, I loop the webbing around the tree with the end fed through itself and then attach a carabiner and a small arborist’s micro pulley with my rope through it to the stand on the ground. I ensure that the pulley is at least a foot or two above the highest point of the stand before hauling it up to the desired height by hand. Once the stand is at the right height, I secure it by clove-hitching the rope to a nearby limb or my climbing stick. This technique allows me to hang my stand without any additional support and makes it much easier to get into position.
Perhaps a lightweight extension ladder could be used to get the pulley to the appropriate height. Since putting up a ladder stand can be a bit noisy regardless, this might not be too much of an issue. I’ve also come across various plates with spikes designed to hold the legs of the ladder stand steady while it’s being raised. Regardless of age, maybe it’s a good idea to have two people working together when putting up a ladder stand for added safety.
I’ve found that the Field and Stream Overlook XL is the best ladder stand available, thanks to its exceptional quality and outstanding comfort. However, my only gripe with the stand is its height, as the platform is a little over 15 feet high. Nonetheless, it’s possible to purchase an additional ladder section to increase the height. As long as you position the stand in an area with sufficient cover, the height should be sufficient.
Hi, guys! Is it possible to install a one-man ladder myself without anyone else?
⭕️ It is possible to install a one-man ladder stand by yourself, but it is not recommended. It is always safer to have someone else help you with the installation process. This is because installing a ladder stand can be a challenging and potentially dangerous task, especially if you are not experienced with it.
⚠️ If you do decide to install a one-man ladder stand by yourself, be sure to carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, use proper safety equipment, and take your time to ensure that everything is installed correctly. 🛑 If you have any doubts or concerns about your ability to install the ladder stand safely, it is best to seek the help of a professional or ask someone else to assist you.
The Field and Stream Lookout Deluxe is a ladder stand that can be easily handled and installed by a single person. It features a robust construction and comes with a convenient flip-up seat. I personally own four of these ladder stands and have not encountered any problems with installing or maneuvering them on my own.
