What is Reflex Sight? π
π A reflex sight is a type of firearm sight that allows the shooter to aim at their target more accurately. It works by projecting a reticle or dot onto a small, clear lens or window that is positioned in front of the shooter’s eye. When the shooter looks through the sight, they can see the reticle superimposed on the target, allowing for precise aiming.
π΄ These sights are also sometimes called red dot sights because many of them use a red dot as the reticle.
Features π
π Red dot reticle: A simple illuminated dot that helps with quick target acquisition.
π Parallax-free: The reticle remains aligned with the target regardless of eye position or angle.
π Unlimited eye relief: The shooter can aim with both eyes open, improving situational awareness.
π Lightweight and compact: They can be mounted on a variety of firearms without adding significant weight or bulk.
π Battery-powered: Reflex sights require a battery to illuminate the reticle.

What are the types of Reflex Sight? π‘
π There are several types available on the market today. π Here are some of the most common types:
π° Tube reflex sights
β have a cylindrical tube that encloses the optical system and reticle. They are often larger and heavier than open sights but may offer a wider field of view and larger objective lens.
π° Open reflex sights
β have an open frame that allows the shooter to see the target and the reticle at the same time. They are typically smaller and lighter than tube sights, making them popular for use on handguns and shotguns.
π° Holographic sights
β use a laser to project a holographic reticle onto a glass plate. They are known for their precision and are often used by military and law enforcement professionals.
π° Prismatic sights
β use a prism to magnify the image of the reticle, providing a clearer and more precise sight picture.
π° Collimator sights
β use a collimated light source to project a reticle onto a lens, providing a clear and precise aim point.
π’ Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of which to use will depend on the user’s specific needs and preferences.

1οΈβ£ Design: Reflex sights typically have a more compact and streamlined design, while red dot sights may have a bulkier, more traditional shape.
2οΈβ£ Reticle: Reflex devices often have a wider variety of reticle options, including crosshairs and other shapes, while red dot sights usually have a simple red dot.
3οΈβ£ Battery life: Reflex sights may have a longer battery life due to their more energy-efficient design, while red dot sights may require more frequent battery changes.
4οΈβ£ Field of view: Reflex products often have a wider field of view, making them better for tracking moving targets, while red dot sights may have a narrower field of view.
5οΈβ£ Price: Reflex devices are often more expensive than red dot sights due to their more advanced design and features.

FAQ π€
How far is a reflex sight good for?
π Reflex sights are designed for close- to medium-range use. π The typical effective range is around 100 yards, but they can be used successfully at distances up to 300 yards.
Are reflex sights accurate?
π Reflex sights are incredibly accurate when properly calibrated. π΄ They can achieve this accuracy because they use a red dot or reflex optic to project an image of the target onto a glass lens. This projected image is then reflected off a mirror and back to your eye, which gives you a clear and unobstructed view of the target.
π They are also parallax free, meaning that the point of aim and the point of impact will be the same regardless of your viewing angle.
What is a commonly used type of reflex sight?
π£ A commonly used type of reflex sight is a red dot sight. π΄ This sight creates a small, red dot on the target that helps you line up your shot faster and more accurately.
Can you use a magnifier with a reflex sight?
β Yes, you can use a magnifier with a reflex sight. These sights are designed to be used without magnification, but some shooters find that using a magnifier makes it easier to aim the firearm.
π If you decide to use a magnifier, be sure to adjust the sight to accommodate for the added magnification.
What are reflex sights made?
π Reflex sights are made up of several optical elements that allow the shooter to see the target and the reticle at the same time.
π The sight is also parallax-free, meaning that the reticle will stay in the same spot even if you move your head around. This helps to keep your shots on target no matter what.
What is a micro-reflex sight?
π’ A micro-reflex sight, also known as a mini – , is a small, lightweight sight that is generally used on handguns and shotguns.
πΉ They are much smaller and lighter than traditional ones, and they typically have a lower magnification.
πΉ They are often used by law enforcement officers and concealed carry permit holders.
Conclusion π§Ύ
Reflex sights are a great addition to any firearm, whether youβre a hunter or just enjoy shooting at the range. Gunsmith, Hunter, Gentleman Adventurer. Life is too short to shoot mass-produced guns. A once-in-a-lifetime hunt deserves a one-of-a-kind gun. Read about me.
I recently acquired a Rock River AR pistol that comes equipped with a 12-inch top Picatinny rail on the upper receiver. I also have a reflex sight that I intend to mount on the pistol, but I’m uncertain where on the rail it should go. Is there an optimal placement for the sight on the rail, or is it a matter of personal preference? Thank you.
π’ When it comes to mounting a reflex sight on an AR pistol, there are a few general guidelines to follow, but ultimately the placement of the sight is a matter of personal preference.
1οΈβ£ One common recommendation is to mount the sight as far forward on the rail as possible while still allowing room for rear backup iron sights if desired. This forward placement can help with quick target acquisition and minimize the effect of any barrel movement on the sight picture.
2οΈβ£ Another consideration is eye relief or the distance between the shooter’s eye and the sight. A reflex sight mounted too far forward or too far back on the rail can affect eye relief, which can impact accuracy and comfort.
π Ultimately, the best placement for the reflex sight will depend on factors such as the shooter’s body mechanics, shooting style, and intended use for the AR pistol. β οΈ It may take some experimentation to find the optimal position for the sight, so don’t be afraid to try out different placements and make adjustments as needed.

I’m considering purchasing either a Red Dot Sight (RDS) or a Reflex Sight, and I’m leaning towards the latter because it offers a wider field of view around the target. In my experience, RDS like the Bushnell TRS-25 tends to obscure a lot of the area surrounding the target.
Could you recommend some of the top RDS/reflex sights available for under $200?
I would suggest looking into Holosun, Vortex, and Primary Arms if you’re searching for affordable RDS. Personally, I use the Primary Arms Advanced Microdot, and it has a remarkable battery life of 50,000 hours. It maintains zero exceptionally well on my .300 Blackout rifle, and it has been in operation since last Christmas without any issues. While I don’t have much familiarity with reflex sights, I do have extensive experience with RDS from my time in the military, and I’m a big fan of their performance.
In my opinion, the TRS25 is an excellent choice. It’s a reliable sight that maintains zero consistently and is comparatively inexpensive compared to other similar options. While I believe Holosun produces superior sights, it’s tough to top the TRS25’s affordability.
I’m the owner of a few Holosuns that I believe are exceptional, but they can be a little pricey and might surpass the $200 budget. A more affordable option, albeit slightly bulkier and heavier, would be the PA Advanced 30mm red dot, which costs around $130. This red dot is my absolute favorite and is mounted on my primary rifle. However, it’s worth noting that this model doesn’t come with a mount, so you’ll need to purchase a PA mount, which brings the total cost to roughly $160.

I’m a big fan of my trusty CMore reflex sight, but when it comes to value for money, I think the Holosun, Primary Arms, and Sig Romeo 5 sights are fantastic deals. As far as shooting with both eyes open goes, the differences between tube-style and HUD-style sights become quite negligible. It’s worth noting that Primary Arms and Sig Romeo 5 are essentially rebranded Holosun models.

What are your thoughts on the Bushnell TRS-25? It’s currently available for $50 on Amazon and has a battery life of around 3,000 hours. I’ve heard that it’s a popular choice among people who are looking for an affordable sight.
Although I haven’t used the Bushnell TRS-25 myself, I’ve heard positive reviews about it. However, I do strongly believe in investing in high-quality equipment that fits within your budget. You don’t necessarily need to shell out Aimpoint-level funds to obtain a good quality sight. Personally, I bought the PA Advanced Micro Dot for $169, and it has been fantastic. I’ve taken it through the toughest of terrains, including snowy mountains and rainy weather, and it has never failed me.

I recently purchased a Romeo 5 red dot sight, and I’m quite impressed with it. The auto on/off feature when you pick up the firearm is a great addition, and the overall design of the sight looks really sleek.
β Yes, a reflex sight can be used on a pistol. In fact, many competitive shooters and law enforcement personnel use reflex sights on their pistols for faster and more accurate target acquisition.
β οΈ However, it may require a specific mounting system or modifications to the pistol to attach the reflex sight securely.

I’m currently using a Trijicon Reflex RX01 NSN model with a 4.5 amber dot, which is mounted on top of my AR-10A2, and I must say, it’s one of the best sights I’ve ever used. All sights nowadays utilize a similar aiming principle, which is reminiscent of Glenn Bindon’s concept of a parallax-free dot sight. If you’re looking for something more compact, you could opt for the RMR, or if you’re on a budget, the Burris Fastfire is a good option. Personally, my Trijicon Reflex sight is accurate up to 400 yards on man-sized targets with ease, and it’s a fantastic piece of equipment. It’s no wonder why the US military has standardized on Trijicon and Aimpoint gear for their optics.

During my 13-month deployment to Iraq, I relied on the Aimpoint CompM2 (an older model) to keep me on target, and it never let me down. Despite being thrown, bounced, slung, and dropped multiple times, it always held its zero. I fired countless rounds through it, and it was always spot on. I have complete faith in the newer Comp series from Aimpoint, and I’m confident that they’re just as durable and reliable. Plus, the battery life is outstanding – I never had to change the battery, even though I left it on in the sector every day.
