The Ruger American is a popular hunting rifle that comes with a number of adjustment features to help shooters customize the firearm to their liking. One such adjustment is the trigger, which can be tweaked to achieve the perfect pull weight for each individual shooter. Here’s how to adjust the trigger on a Ruger American:

  1. Remove the bolt from the rifle by depressing the bolt release button and pulling the bolt rearward.
  2. Look at the back side of the bolt and you’ll see two small screws (see photo).
  3. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen these screws until they are about halfway out of the bolt (do not remove them completely).
  4. Withdraw the bolt from the receiver.
  5. Take a look at the trigger assembly and you’ll see a small spring (see photo).
  6. This is the trigger return spring and it’s what controls the trigger pull weight.
  7. To lighten the trigger pull, simply stretch out this spring a bit.
  8. To make the trigger heavier, compress the spring a bit.
  9. Once you’ve achieved the desired trigger pull weight, reassemble the rifle and test it out.
