What is an Ambi Safety Selector? 🤔

It is a switch mounted on the side of an AR-15 rifle that allows for a safe and secure transition between semi-automatic and full auto settings. It provides a way to quickly and reliably toggle between fire modes without having to manipulate the trigger. With its ambidextrous nature, it also allows for quick and easy access to the safety selector lever from either side.

Best AR-15 Ambi Safety Selector

Features 💥

Ambi safety selectors are an essential component of any AR-15 rifle build, as they allow for fast and easy transitions between safe and fire modes.

  • ✅ Many ambi safety selectors offer two to three extra positions compared to traditional two-position switches. These additional positions provide shooters with increased control over their rifles.
  • ✅ Additionally, ambidextrous selectors can enable shooters to operate the gun safely from either side, providing greater flexibility in shooting scenarios.
  • ✅ Another important factor is the construction material. Selectors made from aluminum are generally lightweight and affordable, while those manufactured from stainless steel tend to be heavier and offer more durability.
  • ✅ Finally, consider compatibility when shopping for a safety selector. Some ambi safety selectors are designed specifically for AR-15 rifles, and may not fit other firearms or gun models with different dimensions.

How to tighten up a safety selector with shims?🛠️

Having a well-fitted safety selector is essential for the proper functioning of your AR-15.

  • 😀 But if you find that your safety selector has some play in it, or if it’s too loose, you might think that the only solution is to buy an entirely new part. Thankfully, that isn’t the case!
  • 🪛 As long as your current safety selector is still in good condition (and compatible with your model), there are a few simple steps you can take to tighten up the fit without any extra parts.

➡️ Shims are one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to snug up a loose AR-15 ambi safety selector.

  • ⚙️ To use a shim to tighten your safety selector, start by removing the selector from its housing on the lower receiver and setting it aside.
  • ⚙️ Take one of your shims and slide it under the back portion of the selector where it fits against the lower receiver wall.
  • ⚙️ All you need to do is add enough pressure while wiggling the shim around until it seats itself into place. Once that’s done, reassemble your AR-15 and test how well it works!
  • ⚙️ You may need to adjust or add more shims until you get an optimal fit – but in most cases, that’s all it takes.

FAQ 🧐

How to choose?
  • 🔶 The first step is to verify whether your weapon is advertised as compatible with the ambi safety selector on the manufacturer’s website.
  • 🔶 The next step is to look at the installation instructions after you’ve confirmed that the ambi safety selector will fit your weapon.
Storing your AR with a safe or fire once the rifle has been cleared?
  • ☑️ Ambidextrous safety selectors offer the user an opportunity to confidently and safely store a weapon with proper trigger discipline. By activating both safe and fire with either hand, you can ensure that no accidental discharges occur as you store your AR-15 away.
What is ambi 45-degree safety?

AR-15 ambi 45-degree safety is also known as an ambidextrous safety selector.

  • ✴️ This type of safety selector is designed to provide the shooter with a more ergonomic and convenient way to switch from “safe” to “fire” mode without having to reach for the trigger guard or adjust their grip.
How to install it?

Installing a safety selector may seem intimidating, but it is actually a relatively simple task. The process of installation can be broken down into five easy steps:

  • ➡️ Step 1: Disassemble your firearm. Make sure that all parts are properly cleaned and lubricated before reassembly.
  • ➡️ Step 2: Remove the pistol grip from the lower receiver by unscrewing any retaining screws.
  • ➡️ Step 3: Insert the safety selector into the selector hole in your lower receiver. It should fit snugly in place with no play or wobble. Secure it with either a rolling pin, spring, detent, or screw.
  • ➡️ Step 4: Insert the selector lever into the lower receiver. Install the firing pins and springs if needed. Ensure that everything is properly aligned before securing them in place with a retention screw or roll pin.
  • ➡️ Step 5: Reinstall the pistol grip on your lower receiver and secure it with retaining screws. Your ambi safety selector should now be fully installed!

More info in the video:

What is the difference between 45 and 60-degree safety selectors?

A 45-degree safety selector provides a shorter throw distance between safe and fire positions, while a 60-degree safety selector provides a longer throw.

  • ✔️ The shorter throw allows for faster transitions between safety positions, which can be useful in tactical situations where speed is important. It also requires less force when depressing the lever, allowing for easier manipulation even with gloved hands.
  • ✔️ The longer throw of the 60-degree safety selector gives more assurance that it won’t get unintentionally bumped into the fire position by accident or during normal use.

Conclusion 😉

When it comes to the best AR-15 ambi safety selector, there are a few things to think about. In this post, we’ve covered some of the most essential factors to consider, but ultimately it will come down to personal preference and what best meets your needs. Hopefully, our buyer’s guide has assisted you in narrowing down your choices and give you a better understanding of what to look for when purchasing. Thank you for taking the time to read this! 🤠👍

I have tried several different ambidextrous selector switches and I have found that the Radian offering is my favorite so far. It has a switchable 90/45 degree design, a positive and almost clicky throw, and the levers look great while also being unnoticeable.

I own a Super Duty lower and I am very fond of its “snappy” ambidextrous safety. It is quick to operate and gives me the confidence that it is securely in place. I am now in the market for a new ambidextrous safety and I am specifically looking for one that is “snappy.”

The issue lies with the depth of the hole in the selector where the detent goes into. I suggest removing the selector and drilling the hole a little deeper. I have not performed this modification on an AR selector, but I have done it on a 1911 safety in the past.

Is there an ambidextrous safety that is easy to operate? I recently installed one, but it’s so stiff that it’s hardly usable. Does it require a break-in period?

Radian Weapons Talon Ambidextrous – is by far the smoothest safety I have ever used. I don’t want to offend anyone, but I replaced a Seekins ambidextrous safety with the Talon and the difference was remarkable. The Seekins felt like it was of poor quality in comparison.

I suggest cutting the safety spring if your safety is too tight and cannot be moved. Start by cutting just one coil and try it again before making any further cuts. It’s important to not over-cut as even a small amount can make a big difference. This should make safety easier to switch.

Do you have a tension screw located under the grip on your lower receiver? I have discovered that the tighter these screws are, the more difficult it is to flip the safety. If this is not the case, then it is likely that you just need to use the safety until it is worn down enough to be comfortable.

I have observed that the shape of the detent can significantly impact the feeling of safety. I have found that the more rounded detents tend to be less stiff and easier to engage, while the pointier ones offer more resistance but provide a snappier feel when engaging.
