What are the positions of AR 15 Safety Selector? 🚦

The AR-15 safety selector has three positions:

1️⃣ Safe: In this position, the safety selector blocks the trigger and the rifle cannot be fired.

🔹 The selector is typically positioned in a horizontal orientation to indicate that the rifle is in a safe condition.

2️⃣ Semi-automatic: In the “semi-automatic” position, the rifle can be fired one round at a time by pulling the trigger.

🔹 The selector is typically positioned in a vertical orientation to indicate that the rifle is ready to fire.

3️⃣ Automatic (if equipped): In the “automatic” position, the rifle can fire continuously as long as the trigger is held down.

🔹 This position is only available on AR-15 rifles that are equipped with a fully automatic trigger group.

⚠️ However, it is important to note that civilian versions of the AR-15 are typically semi-automatic only and do not have an automatic position on the safety selector.

45 vs 60-degree safety selector 🔀

The 45 and 60-degree safety selectors are two different types of controls found on some firearms.

🔀 The main difference between them is the angle at which they are set.

  • 🔹 A 45-degree safety selector is positioned at a 45-degree angle to the receiver.
  • 🔸 A 60-degree – is positioned at a 60-degree angle.

The angle refers to the distance between the “safe” and “fire” positions of the selector switch.

The advantage of a 45-degree safety selector is that it requires less movement to switch from safe to fire or vice versa, which can be especially important in situations where speed and precision are critical, such as in competition shooting or tactical situations. On the other hand, a 60-degree safety selector may offer more clearance for certain types of accessories, such as magnified optics or laser aiming devices, and may be more comfortable for some shooters due to the different angles.

AR 15 Safety Selector

📌 Ultimately, the choice between a 45 or 60-degree safety selector comes down to personal preference and the intended use of the firearm.

FAQ 🤔

How does the safety work on a AR 15?
💡 AR 15s have a three-position safety selector that allows the user to select between safe, semi-automatic, and automatic firing modes.

  • 🔹 In the “safe” position, the hammer is locked in place and cannot be cocked or released. The trigger is also disabled in this position.

👁‍🗨 This is the safest setting and should be used when carrying or storing your AR 15.

  • 🔹 The “semi-automatic” position allows you to fire one round with each pull of the trigger.

👁‍🗨 This is the most common firing mode and is suitable for most shooting situations.

  • 🔹 The “automatic” position allows to fire continuously as long as the trigger is held down.

👁‍🗨 This setting should be used with caution and only when necessary, as it can quickly deplete your ammunition supply.

🎥 Hope the video will be helpful for you:

Where is the safety of a AR 15 located?
🌐 The safety selector of an AR-15 rifle is located on the left side of the receiver, just above the pistol grip. It is a small lever that can be rotated to engage or disengage the safety.

  • ✔️ In the “safe” position, the selector lever is turned upwards and the rifle’s trigger is locked, preventing the weapon from firing.
  • ✔️ In the “fire” position, the selector lever is rotated downwards, allowing the trigger to be pulled and the rifle to be fired.
What is a short-throw safety selector?
🔎 A short-throw safety selector is an upgraded version of the standard safety selector found on AR-15 rifles.

🔐 It is designed to reduce the amount of movement required to engage or disengage the safety lever, resulting in faster and smoother operation.

How much does an Ar-15 safety selector cost?
〽️ The cost of an AR-15 safety selector can vary depending on several factors, including the manufacturer, materials used, and whether it has any additional features.

  • 💰 A basic mil-spec safety selector can typically be purchased for around $5 to $15. These are typically made of steel or aluminum and have a standard length and rotation.
  • 💰 Upgraded safety selectors, such as ambidextrous or short-throw models, can cost more. These can range from $20 to $100 or more, depending on the brand, materials used, and design features.
How long does AR-15 safety selector last?
🔔 The lifespan of an AR-15 safety selector can vary depending on several factors, such as usage frequency, the quality of the component, and the environmental conditions in which it is used.

  • A well-maintained safety selector made of high-quality materials can last for many years, ❌ while a poorly made one or one subjected to harsh conditions may fail prematurely.

Conclusion 🚀

One important part of the AR that should be customized to fit the individual is the safety selector. There are many different types and brands of safeties on the market, so it can be tough to decide which one is best for you. I recently obtained a V7 titanium Ambi safety which is similar to the one that was installed, except it’s made of titanium. I intend to use it on a rifle that I have specifically set up for home defense. I’m curious about which option would be better for my setup, the 90-degree throw or the 57-degree throw.

☝️ The choice between a 90-degree throw safety selector and a 57-degree throw safety selector for home defense ultimately depends on your personal preference and familiarity with each option.

🔎 A 90-degree throw safety selector requires a greater degree of rotation to engage or disengage the safety, which some shooters may prefer for added assurance that the safety is firmly engaged or disengaged.
🔎 On the other hand, a 57-degree throw safety selector requires less rotation and can be engaged or disengaged more quickly, which may be advantageous in high-stress situations.

📌 In general, it’s important to choose a safety selector that you are comfortable with and that you can operate confidently under pressure.

I have just installed the V7 titanium Ambi safety on the 60° side and I’ve noticed that it’s difficult to switch between safe and fire if it has been sitting for a while. I’m not sure what could be causing this issue. Any ideas?
(It’s worth mentioning that I have a POF drop-in trigger installed if that has any relevance.)

it may be a spring/dent tension issue

For a specific build that I’m currently working on, I bought the SLS in gold. I’ve also purchased a Radian Talon, which I understand to be the benchmark for safety selectors. While I’ve seen both designs, I don’t think that Fortis’ design is any weaker or inferior to Radian’s. However, only time will tell.

I’m quite fond of SI as they produce top-notch products at reasonable prices. As I’m currently building two ARs for my nephews, one of whom was born with the wrong hand, I’ll need to outfit him with ambidextrous controls. I’m leaning towards SI as my preferred brand. As always, your review was excellent.

Personally, I actually prefer the strike safety over the Radian, even. Call me strange, but I enjoy using my trigger finger on the right side to switch it into safe, and my left thumb to switch it into the fire. The Strike Ambi switch is an ideal fit for this method, and it feels great in my hand.

I’m curious is the Strike Industries flip selector shorter than other switches on the market? I’ve been experiencing some problems with my CMMG switch making contact with my thumb when in the fire position.

I’m in the process of building my first Aero Precision AR, and I’m having trouble deciding on which Ambidextrous safety selector to choose. While I prefer the 90-degree option, I can’t make up my mind. I’m looking for one that matches the Magpul FDE color scheme. Can you suggest any options?

Matching colors perfectly can be challenging as even a slight difference in temperature can alter the color tone. Personally, I prefer the two-tone aesthetic for this reason, where colors like FDE and black are paired together, or vice versa.

I ended up purchasing the non-ambidextrous option for right-handed users, and it’s been working flawlessly. Although the lever is shorter than my previous one, I think I’ll eventually adjust to it. Thanks for your help, and stay safe!

Yes, there are ambidextrous AR 15 safety selectors available on the market. These types of selectors are designed to be used by both right-handed and left-handed shooters, and they typically feature controls on both sides of the receiver that can be operated with either hand.

📢 Some examples of ambidextrous AR 15 safety selectors include:

🔹 Battle Arms Development Ambidextrous Safety Selector (BAD-ASS)
🔹 Radian Weapons Talon Ambidextrous Safety Selector
🔹 Seekins Precision Ambidextrous Safety Selector
🔹 V Seven Weapon Systems Ambidextrous Safety Selector
