What is AR-15 Trigger? 🔍
⇢ An AR-15 trigger is a component of the AR-15 rifle that is responsible for initiating the firing sequence. When the trigger is pulled, it releases the hammer which then strikes the firing pin and ignites the primer of the cartridge, which in turn ignites the gunpowder and fires the bullet out of the barrel.

What are the types of AR-15 Triggers? 💡
🔎 After a deep research, our team revealed that there are several types of triggers available for the AR-15 platform, each with its unique features and benefits. Here are some of the most common:
🔰 Single-stage trigger is the most basic type of trigger available. It has a single pull weight and no discernible “staging” point before the trigger breaks. | 🔰 Adjustable trigger allows the user to customize the trigger pull weight and other settings to their specific preferences and shooting style. |
🔰 Two-stage trigger has two pull weights, a “staging” weight, and a “break” weight. The user can pull the trigger to the staging weight, take up any slack, and then apply additional pressure to reach the break weight, resulting in a more precise and controlled trigger pull. | 🔰 Binary trigger is a unique type of trigger that fires both when the trigger is pulled and released. This results in very fast follow-up shots but can also be more difficult to control. |
🔰 Drop-in trigger is a complete trigger assembly that can be installed easily without any gunsmithing or modifications to the rifle. This type of trigger is usually pre-adjusted and ready to use out of the box. | 🔰 Match trigger is a high-quality trigger designed for precision shooting, typically used in competitions. It usually has a very light and crisp trigger pull with minimal creep and overtravel. |

Single Stage Vs. Two Stage Triggers ⚔️
⚖️ Single-stage and two-stage triggers are two of the most common types of triggers available for the AR-15 platform. 🔗 Our experts explored and figured out the differences between the two:
⚫️ A single-stage trigger has a single, consistent pull weight from the beginning to the end of the trigger pull. When the trigger is pulled, there is no discernible “staging” point, and the trigger breaks cleanly and immediately.
⚪️ This type of trigger is generally simpler and easier to use, making it a good choice for beginners or for those who prefer a more straightforward trigger pull. |
⚫️ A two-stage trigger has two different pull weights, with a “staging” weight and a “break” weight. The user can pull the trigger to the staging weight, take up any slack, and then apply additional pressure to reach the break weight, resulting in a more precise and controlled trigger pull.
⚪️ This type of trigger is generally more precise and accurate, making it a good choice for precision shooting or long-range shooting. |

I have recently completed the assembly of my first AR and I am thoroughly impressed with the ACT trigger from ALG. It offers a crisp and concise single-stage trigger pull, which surpasses the performance of the gritty mil-spec trigger by a significant margin. While it may not quite measure up to the Accutrigger of my Savage, it is still an excellent choice for any discerning shooter.
I am currently in the process of building my first AR15 and I am seeking recommendations for triggers. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
For those who are new to AR, I would suggest starting with a mil-spec trigger. Once you’ve gained some experience, you may want to consider upgrading to a LaRue MBT2s trigger, which is an excellent option that only costs $90.
While I agree that the LaRue MBT2s trigger is a good choice, personally, I prefer the Geissele SAAE trigger and would choose it over the LaRue every time. Although it may come at a higher cost, the Geissele trigger’s feel is superior in my opinion.
Geissele anything is amazing. The SSA E is one of the best
In my experience, the ALG ACT trigger is a great upgrade and comes at a reasonable price of around $60. Although I currently have a $280 trigger in my AR, I would not say that it is a must-have. The ALG ACT trigger is a solid choice for anyone looking to enhance their AR’s performance.
Using both the ALG ACT and the QMS triggers, with the ACT currently installed in my main rifle. Although both triggers are excellent mil-spec options, I personally prefer the QMS. Both triggers are noticeably smoother and lighter than what is typically found on military guns, but they feel nearly identical in terms of performance. If I were to make a choice based on cost value, I would opt for the QMS.
Geissele SSA is a good option, albeit at a higher price point. However, I would caution against selecting a competition-grade trigger with extremely low pull weight, as this could potentially lead to an accidental discharge while under stress. It’s important to prioritize safety and choose a trigger that is appropriate for your specific needs and intended use.
When should I change the trigger in my AR15?
📢 The decision to change the trigger in your AR-15 ultimately depends on your individual preferences and needs. However, we can highlight a few reasons why you might want to consider changing your trigger:
📍 Inconsistent or Heavy Trigger Pull: If you find that the trigger pulls on your AR-15 are inconsistent or heavy, it may be time to upgrade to a new trigger. An aftermarket trigger can provide a smoother, more consistent trigger pull, which can improve accuracy and overall performance.
📍 Trigger Creep or Overtravel: If you notice that your trigger has excessive creep or overtravel, it may be time to consider a new trigger. Creep is the movement of the trigger before the sear releases, and overtravel is the distance the trigger moves after the sear releases. Both can negatively impact accuracy and can be addressed with a new trigger.
📍 Specialty Applications: If you plan to use your AR-15 for specialized applications such as competition shooting or tactical use, you may want to consider upgrading to a trigger specifically designed for that purpose. Specialty triggers can offer features such as adjustable pull weight, shorter reset, and smoother pulls to enhance performance in those applications.
📍 Personal Preference: Ultimately, the decision to change the trigger in your AR-15 comes down to personal preference. If you are not satisfied with the trigger in your rifle, or if you simply want to try a different trigger to see if it improves your shooting experience, then changing the trigger may be worth considering.
⚠️ It is important to note that changing the trigger in your AR-15 can affect the rifle’s reliability and may void the manufacturer’s warranty. Be sure to do your research and consult with a professional gunsmith before making any modifications to your firearm.
Personally, I am a big fan of the Rock River 2-stage trigger. It has performed admirably for me, allowing me to take out groundhogs up to 200 yards away with ease. The trigger pull is smooth and consistent, with a crisp second stage that provides excellent accuracy. Additionally, it is quite affordable compared to many other triggers on the market. Overall, I highly recommend it.
I am currently using the SD-C trigger, which is essentially the same as the SSA trigger but with a flat trigger bow instead of a curved one, and I am extremely satisfied with its performance. I’ve also had the opportunity to use the SSA trigger and can attest to its excellence. While lighter triggers may work well for some individuals, I personally prefer the pull weight and characteristics of my current trigger and have no desire to switch to a lighter option.
Are there any legal restrictions on AR-15 triggers?
✅ Yes, there are legal restrictions on AR-15 triggers in the United States. ☝🏼 The National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934, as amended, regulates the manufacture, transfer, and possession of certain firearms, including machine guns, which are defined as firearms that can fire more than one shot with a single trigger pull.
🔫 The AR-15 is not classified as a machine gun, but it can be modified with certain trigger components to increase its rate of fire, allowing it to fire rapidly with a single pull of the trigger. These modifications, such as bump stocks, can be considered illegal under the NFA.
🔐 In 2018, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) issued a rule that classified bump stocks as “machine guns” under the NFA, making them illegal to possess, manufacture, or transfer without proper registration and licensing. This rule effectively banned bump stocks and similar devices that increase the rate of fire of semiautomatic firearms.
⚠️ It’s important to note that laws and regulations related to firearms and accessories can vary by state and locality, so it’s important to check local laws and regulations to ensure compliance.
Since purchasing a Geissele trigger, I have been so impressed with its quality that I have decided to exclusively use Geissele triggers in all of my firearms, including my fighting rifle. Their performance and reliability are unmatched in my experience.
When it comes to precision AR triggers, I have two favorites: the TriggerTech Diamond and the Geissele Hi-Speed National Match. While both are excellent, I think I am leaning towards the Geissele NM. I haven’t had the opportunity to try the Timney Calvin Elite yet, but I’ve heard fantastic things about it and am excited to give it a try in the future.
