What is AR Iron Sights? ⌛
These are the sights that attach to an AR-15 rifle and allow the shooter to more easily acquire their target. The iron sight consists of two parts—a front and a rear sight, both of which use a notch or aperture.
How to use Iron Sights on a rifle? ⚡
🔋 To use iron sights, the shooter must properly align the open rear sight with the front sight post. The rear sight should be adjusted until it is level with the top of the front sight and then centred in between the two sides of the notch. This alignment is what creates a proper sight picture. Once you have your sights aligned, you can focus on your target and adjust your aim accordingly.
🔋 When using Iron Sights on a rifle, it’s important to remember to keep both eyes open for optimal accuracy. Keeping one eye closed is not recommended, as this will limit the field of view and may cause problems with depth perception.
- Additionally, shooters need to ensure that they are able to see their front and rear sights clearly in order to get a good line of sight on their target. To do this effectively, make sure both eyes are relaxed and kept slightly away from the gun so that they are not too close or too far away from each other.
🔋 It’s also important to practice proper shooting stance when using Iron Sights on a rifle.
- A good shooting stance provides stability while aiming and helps reduce unnecessary movement while firing shots.
- The traditional shooting stance includes keeping feet at shoulder-width apart, bending at the waist slightly downward (not leaning forward), and keeping elbows bent with arms close to the body for support.
🔋 To further increase accuracy when using Iron Sights on a rifle, use breathing techniques such as slow steady breaths during aiming to help reduce movement caused by panting or shuddering breaths while taking aim at targets.
- Other techniques such as squeezing the trigger slowly instead of jerking it down can also help minimize recoil effects after each shot fired from a rifle equipped with Iron Sights.
🔋 Finally, always remember safety first when using any type of firearm; check that your firearm is unloaded before practising any form of sighting exercise or sighting training drills indoors or outdoors with live ammunition present!

Features 🚀
🧷 It features two points of contact that aid in providing accuracy and precision when aiming. 🧷 🧷 They are also lightweight, durable, and can be easily mounted onto any AR-type rifle.
🧷 The most popular type of AR Iron Sights on the market today are fixed iron sights. These have a single aperture rear sight that is adjustable for both windage and elevation and a front post sight.
🧷 Flip-up sights are especially popular for tactical shooters because they provide instant target acquisition without having to change out different sighting components. Additionally, the front post can be adjusted for elevation, allowing for more precise shooting when moving from one distance to another.
🧷 Finally, some ARs come with reflex sights which are popular in competitive shooting events like 3 Gun matches and USPSA action pistol matches. Reflex sights allow you to “shoot through” them instead of using traditional iron sights which require you to acquire an exact point of aim before firing shots accurately down range.

How To Install AR Iron Sight? ⌛
🌐 The first step is to identify what type of AR sight you have, as each type may require different installation techniques. For example, a fixed iron sight will require an Allen wrench while an adjustable model might need a Phillips screwdriver or other tool.
🌐 It’s time to begin the installation process.
- 🔰Start by inserting the sight into the receiver rail and ensuring that it’s firmly seated and will stay in place when fired.
- 🔰 Then use your chosen tool to secure the mounting screws into place – typically two small Allen screws on fixed sights or four larger Phillips screws on adjustable ones.
🌐 Next, ensure that your AR iron sight is correctly positioned and aligned with your firearm’s barrel and rear sight assembly (on some models this requires loosening then re-tightening the front elevation knob).
- 🔰 To do this correctly, measure from the centre of your AR upper receiver to make sure that both sights are centred accordingly. If they are not, adjust them until they are precisely aligned with one another.
🌐 After ensuring proper alignment between both sights, double-check that your AR iron sight is securely fastened onto the receiver rail and retighten any loose screws if necessary.
🌐 Once everything is locked in place, fire one test round through your rifle to make sure everything operates properly before heading out for a hunt or trip to the range.

My wife surprised me by buying an entry-level S&W AR MPII SPORT, but it turned out to be the optics ready version without iron sights. As I want flip-up iron sights, I’m looking for suggestions on which ones to get. Should I go for Troy, Magpul, or something else? Although it’s been over 30 years since I last fired a rifle during my service days with an M16, I’m aiming for a range of 200 yards and closer. I may consider optics later on, but for now, I just need some reliable iron sights. Thank you for your help.
Please revise the information in our article. I am sure you will find a few great ideas😉
Happy hunting!
I received my Ruger with Magpul iron sights, and they’ve been working well for me. However, I don’t think I would be able to shoot accurately up to 200 yards using just iron sights.
On my rifle, I’ve installed Leapers UTG flip-up iron sights, and I want to clarify that they are actually very similar to the ones that come standard on the Springfield Armory Saint series rifles. Despite what some may say, they’ve proven to be accurate, they co-witness perfectly with my Vortex Strikefire, and they maintain zero well. Plus, I appreciate that they’re made of metal instead of plastic. Ultimately, I consider them to be back-up sights in case my optics fail.
I have experience with both Magpul and Fab Defense flip-up sights, and they are both good options if you prefer plastic. However, I personally prefer the Fab Defense, mainly because of the adjustable front sight with a thumb wheel that doesn’t require any tools. But if you’re looking for something more high-end, I can also recommend the Troy rear flip-up DOA sight. It’s extremely well-made with steel, durable, and folds very flat compared to the polymer flip-up sights.
Personally, I prefer to use a red dot in conjunction with iron sights. This way, if anything happens to the red dot, I can still use the iron sights without needing to remove it.
Hello. Thank you for the post and comments. I have a red dot. And I am thinking about sight. Are iron sights more accurate than red dots?
Iron sights and red dots have different strengths and weaknesses, so it’s difficult to say which one is more accurate overall.
🧨 Iron sights offer precise alignment with a relatively clear sight picture, which can be very effective at short to medium ranges. However, they require a good amount of skill and practice to use effectively, especially when it comes to adjusting for distance and windage.
🧨 On the other hand, red dots provide a fast and intuitive way to acquire targets, especially in close-range situations. While they may not offer the same level of precision as iron sights, they can still be very accurate and effective with proper training and practice.
Ultimately, the choice between iron sights and red dots will depend on your specific needs and preferences, as well as the situation you find yourself in.
Although I’m quite proficient with iron sights (I earned my first two IDPA M Class ratings using them), I have come to realize that red dots are simply superior. They are faster and more accurate than iron sights at virtually all distances, and they also solve the issue of sight focus under stress since the focus is on the target, not the sight itself.
Moreover, modern red dots in the carry/duty tier are rugged, reliable, and compact enough to be carried concealed. While there is certainly nothing wrong with iron sights, I have to admit that red dots are just better in terms of overall performance and effectiveness.
But it is just my opinion and my experience
I have to admit that I am one of those guys who always said things like, “Irons don’t need batteries” and “I’ve always shot with iron sights, no need to change now.”
Iron sights can certainly make shooting easier, especially if you have a good quality sight. However, if your eyesight isn’t as strong as it used to be, using an optic can be a big help.
Hello to everyone! Hope you are well! What is the best colour for iron sights?
The best colour for iron sights can vary depending on a few factors, such as lighting conditions, personal preferences, and the type of shooting you’re doing.
🛑 In general, red or green are popular colours for iron sights, as they can provide a clear contrast against most backgrounds and help with target acquisition. Some shooters also prefer white or yellow, which can provide a more neutral contrast that works well in a variety of lighting conditions.
Ultimately, the best colour for your iron sights is the one that works best for you and allows you to quickly and accurately acquire your target. It’s a good idea to try out different colors and see which one you prefer, as everyone’s eyes are different and what works well for one person may not work as well for another.
Iron sights are an affordable addition to any rifle, and it’s always better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. Even if you plan to primarily use an optic, having iron sights as a backup can provide added peace of mind and ensure that you’re always prepared for any situation.
Fortunately, iron sights are relatively inexpensive and can be easily installed on most rifles.
As someone who has had experience with both iron sights and modern optics like EOTech and Trijicon, I can say that both have their place in shooting. Iron sights are a great way to develop fundamental skills and can provide a solid foundation for shooters of all levels. However, once those skills are established, adding optics can take your game to the next level.
