Best Peep Sights

What are peep sights? 🤔

They are a type of rifle sighting system that use a small hole or aperture, called a peep sight, to help shooters aim. The shooter looks through the peep sight and aligns it with the front sight to shoot accurately.

Peep Sights

Features 💡

Peep sights are an important accessory for shooters who want to improve their accuracy and precision. Here are some features:

  • Material: These sights are typically made of metal, such as aluminum or steel. These materials are durable and resistant to wear and tear.
  • Size: They come in various sizes, with larger sizes providing a larger field of view and smaller sizes allowing for more precise aiming. The size of a peep sight can also affect how bright or dim the sight picture appears.
  • Aperture: The aperture is the opening in the sight through which you aim. They can have different shapes and sizes, with some featuring crosshairs or other sighting aids.
  • Adjustability: Some models are adjustable, which allows you to fine-tune your aiming point to your specific shooting needs. Adjustable sights may have windage and elevation adjustments, or they may allow you to swap out different apertures.
  • Mounting: Such sights can be mounted to your bow or firearm in different ways, such as with screws or clamps.

  • 🔅 Improved form: Using it can improve the shooter’s form by encouraging a consistent anchor point, grip, and release. This results in a more consistent and repeatable shot.

How to install it? 🛠️

Installing peep sights is a relatively simple task that can be completed in minutes.

🚨 Before beginning, make sure you have all the necessary tools and supplies for the job (e.g., hex wrench, screwdriver).

  • ➡️ First, use the included mounting bracket to attach the sight to your riser using two screws. Adjust the sight until it is level and centered before tightening the screws to secure the bracket in place.
  • ➡️ Next, take the sight itself and thread it onto the mounting bracket. Make sure that you don’t twist it too hard as this can damage it.
  • ➡️ Once threaded, use a hex wrench to tighten it in place and position it so that it lines up with your desired shooting angle.
  • ➡️ Finally, adjust the elevation of these sights by turning the elevation knob clockwise or counterclockwise until you reach your desired point of aim.

⚙️How to tighten a loose sight?⚙️

One of the most common problems with peep sights is a loose rear sight. This can lead to inaccuracy and even misfiring when shooting, so it’s important to know how to tighten it properly.

  • 🔰 The first step is to make sure that you have all the necessary tools: a small flathead screwdriver, some gun oil, and a thin piece of cloth or leather. Use the cloth or leather to protect your sight from scratches as you work on it.
  • 🔰 Next, locate the windage screw at the back end of your sight. Turn it counterclockwise until it stops completely (you may need to use some force).
  • 🔰 Then, use the flathead screwdriver to turn the windage screw back clockwise until it is snug, but not so tight that you can’t move the sight anymore.
  • 🔰 Then, use a few drops of gun oil on the windage screw and its threads for lubrication. This will help to prevent any moisture from entering your sight and causing further issues down the road.
  • 🔰 Finally, aim at your target and adjust your sight according to where you want it to be. Make sure that your adjustments are precise, as this will ensure that you have an accurate shot when shooting.

FAQ 😎

How far can you shoot with this sight?

🔷 The distance that you can shoot with a peep sight varies depending on the type of peep sight that you are using.

🎯 However, most peep sights allow you to shoot up to 100 yards accurately.

What happens if my sight is too low?

🛟 If your peep sight is too low, you will not be able to see through it properly and will have difficulty aiming your bow.

🙂 You may need to raise your sight or adjust the string height on your bow to correct the problem.

Does peep sight size matter?

🤔 There is no definitive answer when it comes to peep sight size, as it largely depends on personal preference.

  • 🚩 However, smaller peep sights can be more difficult to see, particularly in low light conditions, while larger peep sights can offer a clearer view.
  • 🚩 Ultimately, it is up to the shooter to decide what size peep sight works best for them.
Does such sight color matter?

✴️ Peep sight color does matter to some shooters.

🟧 While there is no one perfect color for a peep sight, many shooters prefer a red or amber peep sight to help them acquire the target more quickly.

What angle is a peep sight?

⚙️ Peep sights are typically mounted at an angle so that the shooter can see the target more clearly.

💣 The angle will vary depending on the specific sight, but it is typically around 45 degrees. This allows the shooter to line up the target more easily and achieve a better shot.

How are these sights measured?

⭕ Peep sights are measured in terms of their height and the width of the aperture.

  • ⚡ The height is how far above the barrel the peep sight is positioned, while the aperture is the size of the hole itself.
  • ⚡ Most peep’s sights have an aperture measurement of between 1/4″ and 5/8″.
What is an aperture or peep sight?

🧩 An aperture sight, also known as a peep sight, is a type of optical sight that helps shooters aim firearms.

☑️ It accomplishes this by using a small hole (the aperture) to project an image of the target onto a rear-mounted lens. This lens then enlarges the image and allows the shooter to see it more clearly.

Conclusion 😊

Choosing the best peep sight for your rifle can be a daunting task. There are so many different models and brands on the market, each with its own set of pros and cons. In this buyer’s guide, we’ve outlined some of the most important factors to consider when choosing a new sight. With the right peep sight, you can dramatically improve your accuracy and shooting performance. Good shopping! 🛒❤️‍🔥

I am interested in seeing rifles equipped with peep sights and would also like to hear your thoughts on using them for hunting. I have a 30/30 that I am considering putting a peep sight on and using for hunting.

I have several rifles that are equipped with peep sights, but unfortunately, I no longer use them for hunting due to my age-related decline in eyesight. However, if you are still young and have good eyesight, I highly recommend using a peep sight for hunting.

Peep sights are my favorite sights for shooting paper targets and steel, as well as for use in inclement weather. In my opinion, the only drawback is hunting in low light conditions, as it can be more difficult to identify and pick out a deer from the background compared to using a scope. Overall, shooting with a peep sight is just more enjoyable for me.

I installed a Precision Reflex Flip Up Rear Sights on one of my 336’s and I am quite pleased with it. This peep sight is designed to sit low enough that I didn’t have to replace the front sight. Nonetheless, the sight does allow a lot of light in, making it potentially useful for hunting in lower-light conditions.

My eyesight in my right eye isn’t very good, so I’ve had to switch to shooting left-handed with my T/C Cherokee. I’ve heard they make a peep sight for it, but it’s been hard to find. What are your opinions on using peep sights? And is this even a possibility for me?

A few years back, I installed a Marble Arms Rifle Long Bullseye Rear Sight on my Cabela’s rifle and have been loving it ever since. Although I’m not certain, I believe that the same sight might work on your rifle. However, you may have to get a gunsmith to drill and tap a hole for the sight to fit properly.

Replacing the factory sight on your barrel with a peep sight won’t necessarily improve your eyesight. However, mounting a peep sight on the tang and positioning it closer to your eye can make a big difference.

I recently read a book by Dana and Ginger Lamb where they recounted their adventures in a southern border region. One interesting detail that caught my attention was that they carried Colt Woodsman pistols fitted with custom King peep sights. As far as I can recall, King was a renowned sight maker based in Los Angeles during that era. However, I’m not well-versed in peep sights for handguns and have been struggling to recall much about them. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts or personal experiences to share on this matter.

I have personally had the opportunity to shoot Contender pistols with peep sights while target shooting. In my experience, they have proven to be highly accurate at longer ranges between 100 to 200 yards, especially under good lighting conditions. The particular peep sight I used could be easily detached, leaving behind a mounting ring that could function as a ghost ring under lower light conditions. However, neither sight was ideal when using flashlights.

I recently replaced the rear sight on my Ruger Redhawk with a peep sight. The specific model I had was a one-ragged hole sight, which I believe is no longer manufactured. However, I’ve heard that there is a similar sight currently available on the market, but unfortunately, I don’t know the name. Overall, I’m quite pleased with my new peep sight, as it greatly helps my aging eyesight.
