What is Side Charging Upper? 🔍

⇢ A side charging upper is a type of upper receiver for an AR-15 rifle that features a charging handle on the side of the receiver instead of on the rear. This allows for easier and more comfortable charging of the rifle, particularly for left-handed shooters or those using optics that may obstruct the standard charging handle.

What are the types of Side Charging Upper? 💡

📢 There are several types of side charging uppers available in the market. ⚫️ Our experts determined some of the most common:

☄️ Non-Reciprocating Side Charging Upper (SCU) has a handle that is attached to the bolt carrier group, but it doesn’t reciprocate with the bolt during firing. This means that the handle remains in the same position during firing, which can improve accuracy. ☄️ Billet Side Charging Upper is made from a single block of aluminum, which can provide greater durability and strength compared to other types.
☄️ Reciprocating SCU. In this type, the handle is attached to a charging handle that reciprocates with the bolt carrier group during firing. This can make the handle easier to manipulate, but it can also create more movement during firing, which may affect accuracy. ☄️ Forged SCU is made by hammering a piece of metal into shape, which can provide greater structural integrity and resilience. They are often less expensive than billet.
☄️ Left-Handed Side Charging Upper is designed for left-handed shooters, with the charging handle located on the left side of the upper receiver. This can provide greater convenience and ease of use for left-handed shooters. ☄️ Integrated Side Charging Uppers are integrated with the lower receiver, creating a more streamlined and integrated design. These can provide greater ease of use and convenience, especially for competition shooting.

Side Charging vs Rear Charging System

⚖️ Side charging and rear charging are two different methods of charging a firearm, such as an AR-15 rifle.

  • 🔰 In a side charging system, the charging handle is located on the side of the upper receiver, rather than at the rear. This allows the shooter to manipulate the charging handle without having to move their head or shift their grip on the rifle. Some shooters find this more ergonomic and faster to use, especially when shooting from a prone or unsupported position.
  • 🔰 In a rear charging system, the charging handle is located at the rear of the upper receiver, as is typical in most AR-15 rifles. This method requires the shooter to lift their head or change their grip on the rifle to charge it. While it may be less convenient, it is a more traditional and familiar method for many shooters.

🎥 Hope the video will be helpful for you:

FAQ 🤔

How does a side charging handle work?
🔵 The side charging handle is typically attached to the bolt carrier group of the firearm and is located on the left or right side of the receiver.

♻️ To operate the side charging handle, the user simply pulls it back and then releases it, which causes the bolt carrier group to move backward, ejecting the spent casing and loading a new round from the magazine.

How long does a side charging upper last?
🤷🏻 In terms of specific lifespan, it’s difficult to give an exact number since there are so many variables involved.

🔔 However, if the upper is made of high-quality materials and is properly cared for, it should last for tens of thousands of rounds or more.

What side should the charging handle be on?
💁🏻 The charging handle should be on the same side as your firing hand. This will make it easier to access and operate.
Who makes side-charging AR 15 uppers?
🔎 Our experts investigated several manufacturers who make side-charging AR 15 uppers:

  • 🔹 Gibbz Arms
  • 🔹 New Frontier Armory
  • 🔹 Matrix Arms
  • 🔹 American Spirit Arms
  • 🔹 Crosshill Technologies

⚠️ It’s important to note that some of these manufacturers may require specific bolt carrier groups or other components to work with their side-charging uppers, so be sure to check their specifications before making a purchase.

What types of firearms can use a Side Charging Upper?
📢 Side Charging Uppers are commonly used in AR-15 and AR-10 style rifles, as well as some bolt action and semi-automatic rifles.
Can I retrofit my existing firearm with a Side Charging Upper?
🤷🏽‍♂️ It depends on the specific firearm you have and the compatibility of the side charging upper you want to install.

✅ In general, retrofitting a firearm can be done, but it requires careful consideration and possibly some modifications to ensure proper fit and function.

🛑 You should always consult with a gunsmith or firearms expert to ensure compatibility and proper installation.

They are truly remarkable. Personally, I possess a New Frontier model, which is essentially a Gibbs variant. Occasionally, I find myself picking it up just to cycle through a few rounds, contemplating whether or not I could ever return to my previous upper. However, I soon realize that such a prospect is unlikely.

In terms of side charging uppers, Gibbz and its various clones/rebrands reign supreme. They even support piston kits for those who want to go completely unconventional. The only potential drawback is that opting for a round handguard, or one without anti-rotation tabs, may be necessary.

I am a proud owner of the NFA upper and I couldn’t be happier with it. One of its major advantages is its compatibility with any BCG. However, I must admit that it is slightly heavier than other receivers. Nonetheless, I am already considering using it again for my next build.

I’m interested in gathering opinions regarding BCA side chargers or BCA in general. Although they are known for being budget-friendly, I have heard mixed reviews about BCA. As this is my inaugural side charging build, I am aware that there are pricier alternatives available, but I am curious about the durability and performance of BCA products.

If you are comfortable with the prospect of troubleshooting, and don’t mind investing money and time into spare parts and testing, you can assemble a highly enjoyable firearm. It’s important to note that you shouldn’t expect it to run perfectly right from the start, but perhaps you might get lucky.

As a right-handed individual with a left eye dominance, I often feel like an anomaly. However, I have found solace in my side charger upper build with American Spirit Arms on my 3 gun rifle. The non-reciprocating charge handle on my trigger hand side is a perfect fit for me, as it allows me to charge the rifle without having to adjust my position after a failed ignition. In fact, I believe this feature would be useful for anyone who desires greater convenience and efficiency when charging their firearm.

What materials are side charging uppers made from?

📢 Side charging uppers are typically made from aluminum or steel:

🔹 Aluminum is a lightweight and durable material that is commonly used in firearms manufacturing.

🔹 Steel is a stronger material that is also used in firearms manufacturing, but it is heavier than aluminum.

Totally agree with you. Side charging just feels better than the standard for my bench AR. I went with the Crosshill Technologies XSR15 – it’s made of 7075 billet and came with a sweet nitride or nib BCG. It wasn’t exactly cheap, set me back around 315 bones, but it’s been worth every penny. The fit and finish are killer, and the cycling is smoother than a baby’s bottom. And another bonus – with a reciprocating charging handle, you don’t even need a forward assist. Just give it a whack to seat the bolt
