What is the striker-fired trigger? 🧐
It is a type of trigger mechanism used in modern firearms that employs an internal striker to fire the round. This system eliminates the use of a traditional hammer, which can increase the accuracy and reliability of a firearm.
Features 💥
Striker-fired triggers are a popular choice for firearms enthusiasts. They offer a smooth, consistent trigger pull with no external hammer and provide a faster lock time than traditional double-action pistols.
- ☑️ These triggers typically feature an internal striker that is released when the trigger is pulled and uses an inertial firing pin to ignite the round.
- ☑️ They often have fewer moving parts compared to traditional double-action pistols which can help reduce jams and improve reliability.
- ☑️ The single action pulls the weight of these triggers can vary significantly from one model to another depending on its design; some models may require up to 10 lbs. or more pressure while others may require less than 5 lbs.
Benefits 🔥
The striker-fired trigger offers several benefits over conventional triggers.
- 🟣 It is designed to be more reliable and consistent, with fewer moving parts and a lighter trigger pull weight. This makes it easier for shooters of all skill levels to maintain accuracy when engaging targets.
- 🟣 It reduces the amount of recoil felt during firing due to its reduced trigger force and shorter reset time.
- 🟣 Such triggers also offer quicker target acquisition, as there is no need for extra adjustments or fine-tuning before each shot.
- 🟣 These triggers are typically more affordable than their counterparts, allowing gun owners to experience high-quality performance without breaking the bank.
Proper trigger press🤠
⚡ The right trigger press is a very personal decision. In general, it comes down to comfort and accuracy.
🔍 When searching for a trigger consider the weight of the trigger pull (how hard you need to pull to fire the gun).
- 🔶 The lighter the pull weight, the less strain on your finger muscles and joints when shooting.
- 🔶 If your trigger pull weight is too light then it can lead to accidental discharges if not handled correctly.
- 🔶 Some shooters prefer heavier trigger pulls as they feel more secure with a higher level of safety.
🟦 You should also consider the type of trigger reset. A trigger reset is when the trigger must be released before pulling it again to fire a round.
🔶 Some triggers have short and light resets, which can improve shot-to-shot accuracy, while others have longer and heavier resets that some may find more comfortable.
☑️ You should look at the overall quality of engineering and construction of the striker-fired trigger. Does it feel smooth or does it have any rough edges? Are there parts that seem loose or poorly machined? Paying attention to these details will make all the difference in your comfort level and shooting performance.

The desired firearm I am seeking must have a fully precooked firing pin, providing a single-action (SA) trigger pull that is not present in a Glock. I am wondering if the Walther Q5 Match meets these requirements.
In terms of firearms, I am deciding between the PPQ and CZ P10. I have experience shooting a Canik SA and find that it has a similar trigger to the PPQ, with a soft and consistent break without a prominent wall. On the other hand, my P10C has a trigger more akin to a two-stage rifle trigger, with a smooth take-up, solid wall, and clean break.
In my personal experience, the Walther PPQ with the PDP and the Canik has the best trigger pulls straight out of the box. However, despite this, I found that I shot my P10c more accurately than both of them. I attempted to improve the trigger pulls on both the PPQ and Canik by using the Apex Tactical Specialties Aluminum Trigger. It was great, but eventually, I found that the Cajun gun works with a 4.5 lb striker spring and was closer to what I was looking for. After some tinkering, I now have a carbon adjustable trigger and a 3.5 lb striker spring, and it feels almost perfect to me. The only issue was the gritty feeling caused by the firing pin block, which I had to polish away, even though some P10 owners might pretend it’s not there. Overall, I can confidently say that my P10c is my preferred striker-fired pistol due to its excellent trigger pull.
I’m puzzled by the fact that my striker-fired bolt action rifle boasts the most exceptional trigger pull out of all my firearms, while every striker-fired pistol I possess has a relatively mushy trigger pull. It appears that when it comes to pistols, the consensus is that hammer-fired guns offer the best trigger pulls. I am aware that most striker-fired pistols are designed to meet a certain price point, and as a result, the firing pin may be only partially charged by the trigger instead of being fully single-action. This could be a mechanical or economic explanation as to why most striker-fired guns don’t have excellent trigger pulls. Nonetheless, given the size of the gun market, I find it surprising that no one has yet come up with a way to create a striker-fired handgun with a trigger that matches the quality of a rifle. Am I overlooking something obvious here?
In my opinion, it’s not advisable to have the same trigger in a carry gun that you have in a hunting rifle. While the triggers may serve different purposes, they are often designed to meet a certain price point. However, there are usually options to upgrade the trigger pulls on these firearms. It’s always a good idea to go and shoot these guns to see how they perform. In my experience, they tend to improve with use as you become more familiar with them.
In my opinion, a light trigger in a carry firearm is not as safe as a heavy trigger pull. I wouldn’t feel comfortable carrying a gun with a 2lb trigger pull, and re-holstering such a gun would be risky. When I carry my CZ 75, I keep a round chambered and the hammer at half-notch. At the range, I notice that almost every striker-fired gun owner accidentally double-taps my CZ because it requires a different muscle memory.
If we go back a few years, we can see that striker-fired handguns increased the number of accidental shootings significantly, even with a relatively heavy trigger. As a result, the police and the NRA started emphasizing the importance of keeping your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. The previous rule was “Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target,” and with a DA gun, this meant that one could keep their finger inside the trigger guard and on the trigger if needed. However, striker-fired guns changed that rule, and now it is recommended to keep your finger well outside the guard, even if you are holding someone at gunpoint.
I am searching for a gun that has a great striker-fired trigger. Any suggestions?
I find the pull and reset of my FNS9c very enjoyable, but I should note that my only other handgun experience was with a double-action (DA) gun, so keep that in mind.
In my experience, out of my extensive collection of striker-fired pistols which includes the Hudson H9 and Ruger SR9, I find the Hudson to be far superior in terms of its trigger performance.
