What are Boyds Gun Stocks? 🧐
They are the buttstocks and forends of a gun, typically made from wood or synthetic materials. They provide support for firing a rifle and also enable accuracy by providing stability to the shooter’s position. This stock is a popular brand of gun stocks and accessories designed to give shooters a superior shooting experience.
Features 🔥
Boyds gun stocks are known for their durability, reliability, and affordability. With a variety of widths, heights, lengths, and other design features available, they are perfect for every preference and application. Some of the features:
- 🛟 Laminated Hardwood Construction: It offers superior strength while maintaining lightweight and a classic look. The layers of wood are sealed together with a waterproof adhesive to ensure the stock is impervious to moisture damage.
- 🛟 Adjustable Butt Plate: Designed with comfort in mind, this feature allows users to customize the length of pull on their gun stock by fine-tuning the adjustable butt plate.
- 🛟 Drop-In Fit Installation: Many stocks come with an easy drop-in fit installation that requires no gunsmithing or special tools. This makes installation simple and reliable while ensuring a secure fit each time it is used.
- 🛟 Custom Fit Options: Select models offer even more customization options than standard models with custom fit options tailored to each gun’s specific make and model.
Benefits 🤩
Boyd’s gun stocks provide a massive array of benefits for gun owners.
- 💥 These stocks are designed to improve accuracy, ergonomics, and comfort with many models suitable for both left-handed and right-handed shooters.
- 💥 They are crafted from high-grade hardwood, laminates, and synthetic materials to ensure strength and durability that is resistant to weather conditions, corrosion, and wear.
- 💥 The precision fit of stocks can be easily adjusted to the shooter’s individual preferences through the adjustable length of pull, comb height, and check piece angle.
- 💥 In addition, most of these stocks offer useful accessories like recoil pads, swivel studs, and sling attachment points.
- 💥 Last but not least, they come with an unconditional lifetime guarantee!
How to free float a gunstock? 🧑🔧
One of the most important steps in customizing any gun to fit your needs is free-floating the stock and barrel.
📝 Free-floating a barrel on a rifle involves removing any contact between the barrel, forend, action, and other components of the stock that could affect accuracy, making it so that only the action of firing affects bullet trajectory.
- ➡️ Start by carefully removing any screws or hardware that may be connecting them.
- ➡️ Next, install shims between the forend and action to create an even surface for the barrel to rest on. This will ensure there is no contact between the two pieces when tightened down again.
- ➡️ Finally, use a torque wrench to secure all screws and nuts with an appropriate amount of tension for a secure fit without affecting accuracy.
📌 Using Boyds gun stocks for free-floating barrels can improve accuracy and give you more control over your weapon’s performance.

How to pick the right gunstock?🧐
Choosing the ideal Boyds gun stock for your needs can be a difficult decision. It is important to consider several factors to ensure that you are making the best choice.
- 💣 First, it’s important to understand the different types of stocks available from Boyds. The company makes various styles, including traditional wood and laminate wood patterns, tactical-style stocks, thumbhole designs, and long-range precision target stocks.
- 💣 You should also consider the length of pull (LOP) of each stock; this refers to how far back the buttstock will extend when you shoulder the gun. Longer LOPs are usually more comfortable for long shooting sessions, while shorter LOPs may be more useful for quick maneuvers.
- 💣 Another factor to look at is the overall size of the gun and stock, as well as how it fits in your hands.
- 💣 You should also consider the mounting options available; Boyds offers Picatinny rails on some models that allow you to attach scopes, lights, or other attachments directly to the stock.
- 💣 Finally, it’s important to make sure that you choose a quality product. The company has been making high-quality wood and laminate stocks since 1981, so they know what they’re doing when it comes to gunstocks.

Hello there! I recently inherited a mid 80’s Remington 700 in 30-06 and I want to use it as my main hunting rifle. However, I don’t want to damage the original stock. I’m considering getting a Boyd stock to replace it. Would this be a good choice?
I have personal experience with a Boyd stock that came with my CZ 455 and I have to say the quality is impressive. However, I do find it to be a bit on the heavy side. I haven’t explored their options for hunting stocks, but based on my experience with their products, I would assume they make some good ones.
Boyds Short Action Factory Barrel Channel Stock from top-grade laminated hardwood is worth considering. However, it’s important to note that wood can be softer than other materials, so if you decide to go with a wood stock, it may be a good idea to either glass bed your action or opt for the version of the stock that comes with an aluminum bedding block.
I own a couple of Boyd laminate stocks and I’m very pleased with them. The first one is a Royal Jacaranda color on my sporterized Mosin Nagant 91/30, while the second is a green/black thumbhole style that I got on Boyd’s fire sale for half off. I installed it on my Axis in 223 Caliber and, after some trigger adjustments, it shoots like a dream. Based on my experiences with the first two, I’m expecting the new one to be a perfect “drop in and shoot” fit.
I’m considering upgrading the stock on my 10/22 Comp, and Boyd’s Hardwood Featherweight Thumbhole stocks seem like a great option. I’m also interested in adding some custom engraving to make it truly unique.
I have personally purchased a couple of stocks from Boyds for my firearms. One of my rifles is now sporting Boyd’s walnut stock, while my Mosin and SMLE are also fitted with Boyds stocks, also in plain walnut without any checkering or laminated wood. The letting on all of them seems to be spot-on and they were essentially drop-in replacements. The only thing I found to be a bit long as the pull length, but that’s just my personal preference for a slightly shorter length. Overall, I think the walnut wood used in the stocks is of decent quality.
I currently have my Weatherby Vanguard .30-06 in a Hogue stock, which I find to be too flexible for any real precision shooting. I’m considering upgrading to a laminate stock from Boyd’s, which should be stiffer, but I’m concerned about whether I’ll be able to get decent groups with it.
Proper bedding of a rifle stock is one of the most significant improvements you can make to accuracy. When I had my Rem 700 308 in a flimsy polymer stock, the best I could shoot was around 1/2 MOA. So, I switched to a stock (non-adjustable) and even got a custom cheek rest.
Have you personally tested this or are you just relying on someone else’s opinion online? I conducted a side-by-side comparison of the over-molded Hogue stock and a glass/pillar bedded laminate on the same gun, and found no significant improvement in group size. Simply swapping stocks on a factory barrel is unlikely to result in any noticeable improvement.
I asked my friend for advice on upgrading my Tikka T3 rifle and he recommended the XRAY chassis. However, the price was quite high, so I’m considering the Boyds stock from the laminate option, which is only about $100.
I find the pepper laminate stock to be visually appealing. If the aesthetics are important to you and you’re willing to put in some extra effort, then it’s worth considering. Additionally, you can always choose to pillar bed the stock and even make adjustments for detachable bottom metal down the line if needed.
Laminate is a durable and stable material for stocks, and they are an improvement over factory-made plastic ones. While some may consider them to be budget-friendly, I wouldn’t call them “cheap ones”. With a bit of fitting and bedding, you can get the most out of your stock. I enjoy doing these types of modifications, so it’s not a big deal for me.
In my opinion, laminate stocks are superior to solid wood stocks due to their alternating grain pattern which makes them stronger and less likely to flex. You don’t necessarily need an expensive stock to achieve good results, as long as the fit is appropriate, the barrel is floated, and you can comfortably shoot it.
