FAQ 🤔

What type of stock is best for shotguns?
📢 The type of stock that is best for shotguns ultimately depends on personal preference and the intended use of the shotgun:

  • 🦌 For hunting, a traditional stock with a standard length of pull and drop at comb and heel may be preferred as it allows for a more comfortable and natural shooting position for extended periods of time.
  • 🙅🏾 For tactical or home defense purposes, a pistol grip stock or the adjustable stock may be preferred as it allows for better control and maneuverability in close quarters.

⚠️ It’s important to try out different types of stocks to see what feels most comfortable and natural for you and to consider the intended use of the shotgun when making a decision.

How long should a shotgun stock be?
📏 The length of a shotgun stock can vary depending on the individual shooter’s body size and shooting style.

  • ⛔️ A shotgun stock that is too long can result in a shooter’s eye being too far away from the rear sight or scope, making it difficult to get an accurate shot.
  • ⛔️ On the other hand, a stock that is too short can cause the shooter to feel cramped and can lead to poor shooting form.

🔔 As a general guideline, the length of pull (LOP) for a shotgun stock should be measured from the trigger to the center of the buttplate or recoil pad. The LOP should typically be between 13 and 14 inches for most adults. However, taller individuals or those with longer arms may require a longer LOP, while shorter individuals or those with shorter arms may require a shorter LOP.

Are folding stocks legal on shotguns?
📌 The legality of folding stocks on shotguns depends on the specific laws and regulations of your jurisdiction. In some places, folding stocks may be legal, while in others they may be restricted or prohibited.

☑️ In the United States, for example, federal law allows for the use of folding or collapsible stocks on shotguns as long as the overall length of the shotgun is not less than 26 inches and the barrel length is at least 18 inches.

What are shotgun stocks made of?
🔎 Here are some of the most common materials:

  • 🔗 Wood is a traditional and classic material for shotgun stocks. It is durable and has a natural aesthetic appeal. However, wood can be susceptible to warping, cracking, and other forms of damage over time. It also tends to be heavier than other materials.
  • 🔗 Synthetic materials such as polymer or fiberglass are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant. They can be molded into a variety of shapes and textures for a comfortable grip. Synthetic stocks can be a good choice for those who use their shotgun in harsh environments.
  • 🔗 Composite materials are a blend of different materials, often including synthetic materials and carbon fibers. They offer the durability and weather resistance of synthetic materials with the added stiffness and strength of carbon fibers. Composite stocks tend to be lightweight and offer good balance and stability.
  • 🔗 Aluminum stocks are lightweight, strong, and durable. They are often used on tactical or military-style shotguns where weight and strength are important considerations.

🔐 The choice of material for a shotgun stock will depend on personal preference, intended use, and budget. It’s important to select a stock material that is comfortable, durable, and well-suited to the type of shooting you plan to do.

What are the parts of a shotgun stock?
🔎 Here are the main parts of a shotgun stock:

  • 📍 The butt is the rear portion of the shotgun stock that rests against the shoulder of the shooter. It can be made from a variety of materials and may include a recoil pad to help reduce felt recoil.
  • 📍 The comb is the top portion of the stock that runs along the top of the receiver. It provides a reference point for the shooter’s cheek and helps to maintain proper alignment with the sights or scope.
  • 📍 The grip is the portion of the stock that the shooter holds onto with their dominant hand. It may feature checkering or other texturing to provide a secure grip, and may be angled or contoured to provide a comfortable hold.
  • 📍 The trigger guard is a component that surrounds the shotgun’s trigger. It helps to protect the trigger and prevent accidental discharges.
  • 📍 The sling swivel is a metal loop or attachment point that allows a sling to be attached to the shotgun stock. This can be useful for carrying the shotgun over long distances or for shooting from a supported position.
  • 📍 The stock bolt is a screw or bolt that secures the stock to the receiver of the shotgun. It is typically located near the rear of the stock and may be visible on the exterior of the stock.

I have a Hogue Overmolded stock that offers two options for length of pull adjustment: 14 inches and 12 inches. While this may not provide as many adjustment increments as the Magpul stock, it does allow for a faster and more natural shouldering position. However, it’s worth noting that the encircled thumb may be positioned closer to your nose, particularly with a 3-inch difference in the length of pull. That said, the Hogue stock offers superior tactile feedback under all conditions.

Do I need to modify it in order to use it with a buffer tube that is not mil-spec?

I own a Remington 870 shotgun that has a Knoxx recoil-reducing stock installed, and I can confirm that it functions as advertised.

Hey, does the stock prevent the trigger housing from being removed without first taking off the stock? Essentially, is it necessary to remove the entire stock to access and remove the trigger assembly?

📢 In some firearms, the stock may be attached in such a way that it blocks access to the trigger assembly, and it may need to be removed before the trigger assembly can be accessed. 📢 In other firearms, the stock may be designed to allow easy access to the trigger assembly without needing to remove the stock.

⚠️ It’s best to consult the specific firearm’s owner’s manual or a qualified gunsmith to determine the correct procedure for accessing and removing the trigger assembly.

I recently assembled a home defense shotgun using an older WesternField 550ABD (which is a rebadged Mossberg 500 sold by Montgomery Wards). For the stock and forend, I opted for the Magpul SGA model. In my opinion, a shorter stock is ideal for a home defense shotgun, as it allows for a more squared stance towards the target, as opposed to the more angled stance used for wing shooting. While the Hogue and Mossberg Bantam stocks are also viable options, I found the Magpul stock to be particularly appealing because it allows for length adjustments in 1/2″ increments.

I’m curious, is the buffer tube made of metal or plastic?
