What is Remington 870 Magazine Extension? 🧐
It is an accessory that attaches to shotguns, increasing their capacity by adding extra rounds. This can be a great addition for those who shoot competitively or hunt with Remington 870 shotguns since it offers enhanced performance and convenience.
Benefits 🤩
The magazine extensions are a great accessory to have for shotguns.
- ❇️ The first benefit is that they increase the capacity of Remington 870 magazines. This means you can load more rounds in your magazine before having to reload, which is especially useful in tactical or hunting scenarios.
- ❇️ Another advantage is improved ergonomics. By extending the length of the Remington 870’s magazine tube, the extensions make it easier to grasp and control the shotgun while shooting or loading rounds into the magazine. This can help improve comfort and performance when using your shotgun.
- ❇️ Finally, it also provides improved access to the forend cap of your shotgun – something that’s particularly useful if you’re hoping to use an aftermarket tactical forend with your gun.
👍 Overall, the magazine extensions are incredibly beneficial accessories for shotguns due to their ability to increase capacity, improve ergonomics and provide easier access for aftermarket modifications such as tactical forends with Picatinny rails systems.

Types and capacity 🤠
There are two main types are available: single-piece extensions and two-piece extensions.
- ➡️ Single-piece extensions offer a seamless design, with no break or gap between the magazine tube and extension. This ensures that your shells are an even length and sit flush against one another in the extended magazine tube. Additionally, some single-piece magazine extensions feature ports for easy loading of additional shells without having to disassemble the gun.
- ➡️ Two-piece extensions consist of two parts: an extension tube with shell holders and a clamp that is fastened over the existing factory tube. This type of magazine extension offers increased capacity at a fraction of the cost of its single-piece counterpart; however, it may require more frequent maintenance due to the gap between the extension and the existing magazine tube.
🎯 Depending on the magazine extension model you purchase, it can hold a varying number of ammunition rounds.
- ✔️ Standard Remington 870s come with a four-round magazine tube and extensions that allow for up to nine rounds total.
- ✔️ Some models have extended magazines available, increasing the capacity even further.
- ✔️ Also offers larger magazine extensions, such as the +2 or +3 extensions which can increase your Remington 870’s capacity to eleven or thirteen rounds respectively.
🚨 Regardless of which extension you choose, make sure you take into account local laws and regulations regarding firearm ammunition storage. It is important to be aware of these restrictions when shopping for a Remington 870 magazine extension.

How to install it? 🧑🔧
Installing magazine extensions is a simple process. You will need basic tools such as screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, and pliers.
- 🛠️ First, remove the Remington 870’s plug or factory magazine cap. This can be done with a screwdriver.
- 🛠️ Once removed, place one end of the extension into the receiver followed by inserting a tube retaining pin from the other side to eliminate any play between them.
- 🛠️ If needed, attach a tension spring or follower retainer according to your shotgun model before securing it with an Allen wrench.
- 🛠️ Next, place the other end of the magazine extension against the barrel and mark two areas for drilling.
- 🛠️ Once marked, use a 3/16 drill bit to create holes in both locations on the barrel.
- 🛠️ Place the extension over these holes and secure it with two locking screws provided by the manufacturer into each hole.
- 🛠️ Finally, test your extension for proper fitting and operation before hitting the range!

I own an older shotgun with a blued 18-inch sight barrel, and I’m looking to get a plus 2 extension for it. I have heard that the factory Remington model is a good choice, but I don’t want a Parkerized one. Is there anything wrong with the factory Remington option?
Your shotgun’s age could determine the type of “tube extension bracket” you need. According to Remington, the company changed the distance between the tube extension and the barrel in 1990, so having the incorrect bracket can result in your extension either being pushed away from the barrel or pulled towards it at an angle. This misalignment can cause shells to become jammed due to the uneven gap between the magazine and the tube extension. To determine which type of bracket you have, check for a large “X” stamped near the tensioning screw’s head on the bracket. The presence of the “X” indicates that you have the new-style bracket (post-1990), while the absence of the mark means you have the old-style bracket.
I’m not sure when my shotgun was manufactured, but I bought it used around 1985. I realized that I made a mistake in my previous message, the barrel length is 20 inches, not 18 inches. I have checked, and it has the “X” on the clamp. So, I will need to be careful during installation and purchase the old-style clamp you mentioned if necessary, to ensure a proper fit. Thank you for the information.
I’m looking for a magazine extension that will allow me to carry two extra rounds and be nearly flush with the end of my shotgun’s barrel. Will I need to replace the magazine spring to achieve this? And is it just a matter of screwing on the extension to my shotgun?
I recommend checking out Wilson Combat Remington 870 Extension Tube. They produce a +2 extension that fits flush with an 18-inch barrel and comes with a new spring and a “high-performance follower.” Although a factory +2 extension on an 18-inch 870 is advertised as a 6-shot capacity plus one in the chamber, I’m confident that I can fit an extra round in there as most 2 3/4 inch shells are only 2 1/2 inches long, allowing for the storage of six 3-inch shells in the magazine tube.
I’ve also used a Choate Tool Remington 870 Extension. According to the product description, it’s supposed to be a 7-round extension, but my extension only holds 6 rounds. It fits flush with my 18.5-inch barrel. It was a bit of a hassle to get the dimples to align properly, but the rest of the installation was fine. The clamp/side swivel, follower, and new spring are included. The dimple adjustment took a while, but the barrel ring covers up the holes in the original magazine tube.
I am having trouble removing the magazine tube extension from my 870 shotgun. I would like to know if the magazine nut is part of the extension or if it should unscrew independently. Do I need to loosen the barrel/tube clamp to remove the extension?
Every extension tube I’ve encountered has a magazine nut that is integrated into the tube. This nut features a ball bearing that functions as a ratchet-locking mechanism, making it difficult to turn. However, once it is loosened, the locking mechanism will no longer engage. To access the nut, you will need to remove the clamp that holds the tube and barrel together. To loosen the nut, you must apply significant force by turning it. Take caution not to inadvertently shoot yourself in the eye with the spring as you work.
The magazine extension tube on the 870 is not connected to the coupling nut (the circular component with ridges). It is easily removable from the factory setup, but cannot be removed by hand. To remove it, you will need a strip of leather from an old shoe or belt (I used a 4-inch strip cut from an old belt) and a pair of large-sized pliers. Wrap the leather around the coupling and secure it with the pliers. Turn the pliers counterclockwise (lefty-loosey) and the coupling should come off smoothly. Be cautious when reaching the end of the threads, as the magazine spring may suddenly pop out. After removing the coupling, you will find that it can also be unscrewed from the extension tube.
