Features 💡

In the world of firearms, the 1911 is a classic handgun that has stood the test of time. However, a crucial component of any pistol is the magazine. Here are some important features:

  • ⌛️ Capacity: It is an essential feature to consider. The standard capacity of these magazines is seven rounds. However, some manufacturers now offer magazines with higher capacity, with the most popular being eight rounds.
  • ⌛️ Material: It can be made of different materials, including steel, aluminum, and polymer. Steel magazines are highly durable and can withstand the rigors of frequent use. Aluminum magazines are lightweight but not as durable as steel. Polymer magazines are the lightest of the three but are also the least durable.
  • ⌛️ Follower: The follower is the piece that pushes the rounds up toward the feed lips. It is an essential component of any magazine, and having a reliable follower is critical. A good follower should be easy to install and remove and should be made of quality materials such as stainless steel.
  • ⌛️ Finish: The finish of a magazine not only enhances its appearance but also protects it from the elements. There are different types of finishes available, including blue, Parkerized, and stainless steel.
  • ⌛️ Spring: The spring is the component responsible for feeding the rounds into the chamber. A good spring should be able to withstand frequent use without losing its tension.

⚙️Disassemble, clean, and reassemble⚙️

Cleaning and maintaining your 1911 magazine is an essential part of keeping it in working order.

  • 🛟 The first step is to disassemble the magazine. To do this, you will need a flat-head screwdriver, some cleaning solvent, a rag, and compressed air (if available).
  • 🛟 Begin by removing the floor plate at the bottom of the magazine. Once the floor plate is removed, you can take out the follower and spring assembly.
  • 🛟 Clean each piece of the magazine individually by using a rag dipped in cleaning solvent to wipe away any dirt or residue.
  • 🛟 If possible, blow compressed air into the pieces to get rid of any excess solvent before reassembling them.
  • 🛟 Once all the components are clean, you can begin reassembling them.
  • 🛟 Start by placing the spring and follower back into the lower half of the magazine body and securing it with the floor plate. Then put back together both halves of the magazine body and make sure they fit snugly against each other. Secure these pieces with a screwdriver until tight.

😉 Once everything is reassembled correctly, your 1911 magazine should be ready for use.

FAQ 😎

Are most 1911 magazines universal?

➡️ While many magazines share some common characteristics, such as a single-stack design and a spring-loaded follower, not all magazines are universal.

  • 🔶 Different models can vary in size, shape, and caliber, and magazines that are designed for one model may not fit another.
  • 🔶 Additionally, some magazines may be compatible with multiple models, while others are specific to a certain model or brand.

📌 It’s important to always check the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure that a magazine is compatible with your particular 1911 model.

How many rounds does a magazine have?

🤔 A 1911 magazine can have varying capacities depending on the specific model and the caliber it is designed for.

  • 💥 Generally, standard full-size magazines for the .45 ACP cartridge have a capacity of 7 rounds.
  • 💥 However, magazines for other calibers such as 9mm, .40 S&W, and 10mm may have different capacities ranging from 8 to 10 rounds.

👍 Overall, it’s important to use magazines that are designed specifically for your 1911 model and caliber to ensure proper fit and function.

What is the best 1911 mag well?

💠 One of the most popular mag wells is the Wilson Combat – 1911 Extended Magazine Well. This mag well is designed to fit most full-size models and is made of high-quality stainless steel.

🟣 Ultimately, the best mag well is the one that fits your specific needs and preferences.

How thick is a magazine?

✅ The thickness of a magazine can vary depending on the manufacturer and model of the magazine.

  • ⭕ However, most 1911 magazines have a thickness of around 0.93 inches (23.6 mm) at the widest point, which is usually the base of the magazine.
  • ⭕ The thickness may decrease towards the top of the magazine, where it inserts into the firearm’s grip. It’s always a good idea to measure your specific magazine to ensure that it fits properly in your 1911 pistol.
What size is it?

🧐 The size of a 1911 magazine depends on the model and caliber of the firearm.

  • 📝 Standard 1911 magazines for the .45 ACP cartridge typically have a capacity of 7-8 rounds and measure around 5 inches in length, 0.75 inches in width, and 0.9 inches in thickness.
  • 📝 Magazines for the 9mm and .38 Super cartridges are generally the same sizes but with a higher capacity of 9-10 rounds.
  • 📝 Some manufacturers also produce extended magazines with a capacity of 10-12 rounds, which are typically longer and may require a larger mag well.
What materials is a 1911 magazine made from?

😀 1911 magazines can be made from a variety of materials, including stainless steel, blued steel, aluminum, and polymer.

  • 💣 Stainless steel and blued steel are the most common materials used for the magazine tube and follower, while the base plate can be made from steel or polymer.
  • 💣 The magazine spring is typically made from high-tensile steel or chrome-silicon wire for strength and durability.
  • 💣 Some aftermarket magazines may also feature additional materials or coatings, such as Teflon or nickel plating, for enhanced reliability and ease of use.

➡️ Ultimately, the materials used in a magazine will affect its weight, durability, and reliability, so it’s important to choose a magazine that is made from high-quality materials and built to withstand heavy use.

Conclusion 🙂

Choosing the right 1911 magazine can make all the difference when it comes to accuracy and reliability. I recently acquired a Springfield mil-spec 1911 and I’m curious about which magazines are the most reliable and which ones would work best with my firearm.

The choice of the most reliable magazines for 1911s will vary depending on the specific firearm. However, CMC and Wilson Combat are both highly regarded brands. I use Wilson Combat 1911 ETM-V Vickers Duty Magazine and have never experienced any issues with them.

Based on my experience, I’ve found that in general, the most reliable magazines for 1911 depend on the specific gun. However, CMC and Wilson Combat are usually highly regarded in the 1911 community. I also use Wilson Combat 1911 ETM-V Vickers Duty Magazine and have never had any issues with them. While the factory magazines that come with the gun are often the most reliable, some OEM magazines can also run fine.

I’m looking for some 8-round 1911 magazines that are both reliable and affordable. Any suggestions?

In my experience, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to finding the perfect magazine for 1911. Ideally, it should feed rounds reliably, drop free from the gun, and have a long lifespan.

It seems like you’re looking for an affordable 1911 magazine. Just keep in mind that if it’s for carry, you might not want to skimp on quality. That being said, I’ve had great luck with Brownells Bundles 1911 9mm Magazines.

I have two 1911 magazines with me at the moment, one with a 7-round capacity and the other with 8 rounds. Interestingly, there’s not much difference between them in terms of size, except for the base plate. I wonder why all 1911 magazines aren’t 8-round since the only difference seems to be a slightly smaller spring and follower.

In my experience, it can be more challenging to ensure the reliability of 8-round magazines without using an extended baseplate. If you’re looking for standard baseplate 8-round magazines, I recommend sticking with reputable brands like Wilson Combat or Ed Brown to ensure high quality and reliability.

In my experience, I’ve found that eight-round magazines (or seven rounds in Officer’s size) are generally less reliable due to the shorter followers and different springs required to accommodate the extra round. This can increase the chances of a misfeed and cause greater wear and tear on the mag. Some eight-round magazines may also have problems in certain firearms or for shooters with weaker wrists.

In my opinion, using an 8-round magazine can lead to more failures due to the extra pressure it puts on the receiver. However, some experts hold this belief more strongly than others. I prefer sticking with the standard 7-round magazine, as I believe it’s more reliable.
