Trigger Terminology 🔥

🚩 Pull weight is the amount of force needed to fire a round from the gun. This can range from 4 – 8 lbs depending on the AR trigger you choose.

🚩 Trigger reset distance is how far back the trigger needs to be pulled before it resets itself and is ready to fire again.

  • Shorter distances typically indicate faster follow-up shots while longer distances generally give better accuracy potential.

🚩 Trigger breakpoints are set by manufacturers and refer to where in a given pull weight range your AR trigger will break or fire off a round.

🚩Creep is an undesirable phenomenon that occurs when there is excessive movement before the shot breaks and can cause inconsistencies in your accuracy or rhythm when shooting multiple rounds in succession.

Types 🔰

🌐 Single-stage trigger.

A single-stage trigger is often thought of as the ‘standard’ trigger and has a short, smooth pull with no discernible break. It may also have some take-up or creep before the sear releases, depending on how it is adjusted.

🌐 Two-stage trigger

It has both a ‘take up’ stage and then a crisp release point. It offers more precision than its single-stage counterpart since its second stage requires shooters to apply additional pressure before firing. Additionally, because of the extra tension in the trigger pull, they tend to be less susceptible to accidental discharges due to handling or other external factors such as bumps or jarring motions while walking or running with rifles in hand.

🌐 Adjustable AR triggers

They allow users to customize the weight of their AR’s pull as well as adjust pre-travel/over-travel via screws located inside the trigger housing. They offer ultimate control over every aspect of your AR’s shooting experience from accuracy enhancement all the way down to comfort level adjustments during extended shooting sessions.

Installation ⚡

📌 The first step in installing triggers is to remove the buttstock from the AR rifle. Do this by carefully disengaging the takedown pins that secure the upper and lower receivers together.

📌 Once you have removed the buttstock, locate the hammer/trigger pin located on either side of the AR receiver. Using a wrench or pliers, remove both pins and set them aside for later reassembly.

📌 Next, insert your trigger into the AR receiver’s hammer/trigger housing. Ensure that it’s properly seated in place before continuing to the next step which is to attach the safety selector switch if applicable with provided pins or screws.

📌 Afterward, insert a new hammer/trigger pin through both sides of the receiver’s hammer/trigger housing until it rests securely in place.

📌 Finally, reattach the buttstock using takedown pins while ensuring they are properly aligned with the rifle’s upper and lower receivers.

FAQ 📝

How to choose the best AR trigger for hunting?

There are a few things that you should keep in mind when choosing the trigger for hunting.

  • ⚡ The first is the weight of the trigger pull. You want to make sure that the trigger pull is light enough that you can easily shoot without disturbing your aim but heavy enough that you won’t accidentally discharge your weapon.
  • ⚡ The next thing to consider is the size of the AR trigger. You want to make sure that it’s small enough to fit comfortably in your hand but large enough that you can easily reach it with your finger.
  • ⚡ The last thing to consider is the material. You want to make sure that it’s made from a durable material that will withstand the elements and wear and tear.
What is the standard trigger pull on an AR-15?
The AR-15 is a gas-operated, semi-automatic rifle. It has a standard trigger pull of approximately 6 pounds. However, the AR-15 can be modified to have a lighter trigger pull. There are many aftermarket triggers available that can reduce the trigger pull to as little as 3 pounds.
What is trigger reset?

Trigger reset is the distance that your finger must travel after firing a round before it can fire another.

✅ This needs to be taken into account, as it can affect accuracy and precision when shooting. A shorter trigger reset is ideal, as having a short distance between shots makes it easier for shooters to maintain their aim and achieve better accuracy.

✅ Some AR triggers are adjustable, allowing users to adjust the trigger reset to their preference. This can be beneficial for shooters who want a custom fit for their gun and shooting style.

What are the benefits of a lighter AR trigger?

A lighter AR trigger has several benefits.

  • 🧷 First, it increases the accuracy of the rifle by decreasing the amount of time between when the trigger is pulled and when the round is fired.
  • 🧷 Second, it reduces muzzle rise, which makes follow-up shots easier. Finally, it can help reduce fatigue during extended shooting sessions.
What is a good trigger pull weight for an AR-15?

🔋 Generally, it is recommended that AR-15s have a trigger pull weight of between 4.5 and 8 pounds. This range allows for enough accuracy while also preventing an unintentional discharge due to an overly light trigger pull weight.

🔋 A lighter AR-15 trigger pull weight can help reduce overall recoil and improve accuracy as less force is required to fire each round. On the other hand, having a very light trigger pull weight can be dangerous as it increases the risk of unintentional discharges.

🔋 It is important to find a balance between safety, accuracy, and comfort when selecting your AR-15’s trigger pull weight.

Conclusion 🎉

I read the post, good one. Informative explanation. I read about the types as well.
Does accuracy vary significantly between the two options, or is it simply a matter of individual preference? My question is about single stage and two stage triggers

Zack Buck

Yes, there is a difference in accuracy

🟡 Single-stage triggers offer a crisp, consistent break with minimal take-up distance and reset points before reaching their maximum pressure.

🟡 Two-stage triggers offer extra safety when firing by having two stages: the first stage is the lightest of pressure, followed by the second heavier stage.

🚩 Generally speaking, however, two-stage AR triggers provide slightly better accuracy than single-stage triggers due to the control they provide during firing.

In my opinion, proper trigger control is a crucial factor that determines the accuracy of your shots. Devoting sufficient practice time to familiarize yourself with your trigger mechanism and its nuances is more critical than choosing between a single stage or two stage trigger for hunting purposes.

It seems that personal preference may play a role in choosing between a single stage or two stage trigger for hunting. However, other critical factors that may have a greater impact on accuracy include the quality of the trigger mechanism and the shooter’s experience and familiarity with using the trigger.

IMHO a two-stage trigger should not be the go-to option if you seek a highly accurate trigger mechanism. While a two-stage trigger can be advantageous in terms of providing an extra layer of safety, it may lead to less accuracy compared to a clean and crisp single-stage trigger. With a single-stage trigger, the break occurs with pressure, whereas with a two-stage trigger, you need to pull past the first stage to reach the second, which can potentially introduce errors during the shot if you take longer to pull the trigger.

From my experience, when it comes to hunting, a two-stage trigger may be the preferable choice. This is because it allows the shooter to slowly and methodically pull the trigger while ensuring that everything is properly aligned and in place before the shot is fired. This can help to enhance accuracy and precision while hunting.

There was little information about binary triggers. Is binary trigger can be used for hunting?

Zack Buck
Editor
Reply to  AlHarezm

Thank you for your note
Binary triggers refer to specialized AR triggers that allow the user to fire a weapon with one pull and release of the trigger.
🟢 Unlike standard AR triggers, which only require a single pull and hold of the trigger, binary triggers can be set to allow both semi-automatic and full-automatic firing with a single press.
A binary AR trigger is a rapidly growing trend among AR owners, but its use in hunting is still a subject of debate.
🔵 While some AR shooters find the faster rate of fire and lighter pull of the binary AR trigger beneficial when hunting, others believe that it could be dangerous to use in this application.

If you are hunting hogs while moving in a side-by-side, it may be worth considering a two-stage trigger. In this scenario, the added safety of a two-stage trigger could be beneficial, and the potential decrease in accuracy may be less relevant since the movement of the vehicle can already affect the shot.

I have come across videos of individuals hunting hogs using full auto guns, so it may be possible to use a binary trigger in this scenario. However, it’s worth noting that for safety reasons, hunting from an elevated position such as a helicopter😁 or hunting/tree stand😁 is recommended. This can ensure that the shooter has a clear and safe backstop for their shots, thereby reducing the likelihood of any accidents or injuries.)))

A Binary trigger allows for dual-action shooting – it fires when you pull the trigger, and then again as soon as you release it. If you’re looking to have some fun while spending money on loud noises fast, this could be just what you need))))

Thank you for the post. I had in my hands many of these triggers. I understand that some may criticize my opinion on this, but I personally feel that the Geiselle SD-E trigger in my M&P is a great addition, although it may not be worth the $260 price tag. While I do appreciate and enjoy the trigger’s benefits, I don’t believe it provides a significant enough improvement to justify the steep cost.
