What is AR-15 BCG? 👀
AR-15 BCG stands for AR-15 bolt carrier group. It is an important part of AR-15 rifles as it contains the components necessary to load and fire ammunition in the platform. It includes:
- ⚙️ bolt;
- ⚙️ firing pin;
- ⚙️ cam pin;
- ⚙️ gas key;
- ⚙️ firing pin retaining pin.
Features 🔋
When shopping for AR-15 BCGs, there are several features to keep in mind. The most common features include:
- ⭕️ Bolt Carrier Group Design ➔ it traditionally features either “standard” or “lightweight” designs with each having its own attributes and tradeoffs.
- ⭕️ Coating ➔ vary significantly from product to product ranging from hard chrome/nitride finishes to various lubricity coatings.
- ⭕️ Bolt Assembly ➔ most BCG have qualitative and complete bolt assemblies made of 9310 steel, however, some manufacturers offer options with better materials such as Carpenter 158 or C158 and S7 tool steel.
- ⭕️ Extractor Components ➔ include the extractor spring, extractor pin, and O ring.
Benefits 🔐
💣 The major benefit of an AR-15 BCG is its ability to reliably cycle rounds ⟹ meaning it can feed from magazines and extract spent casings from chambers efficiently and accurately. |
💣 It also features an improved design compared to other mil-spec ARs. |
💣 These BCGs are built with enhanced materials for higher quality performance and better longevity than standard AR components. |
💣 It also features an enhanced surface finish ⟹ which increases the overall lubricity of BCGs, reducing friction between the bolt and carrier while also providing a smoother operation. |
💣 AR-15 BCGs are designed for multiple configurations, as well as for use in various AR platform calibers. This makes them versatile and can help ensure that your AR runs reliably no matter what configuration or caliber you are using. |
How to choose the best AR-15 BCG? 💡
When looking for the best AR-15 BCG on the market there are a few things you should consider.
1️⃣ The material used should be strong and durable;
- 🔹 Generally speaking, steel is preferred but other materials like aluminum can also be used depending on your budget and preferences.
2️⃣ Additionally, look at any coatings or finishes that have been applied to increase corrosion resistance and ensure reliability over time.
3️⃣ The BCG should also be compatible with your platform and caliber;
- 🔹 For example, you wouldn’t want a .223 AR-15 BCG for a 7.62 AR-15 rifle as the two calibers require different bolt carrier groups. Be sure to double-check compatibility before purchasing to ensure proper function in your rifle.
4️⃣ Finally, consider any extra features that may come with certain BCGs such as:
- 🔹chrome-lined or nitride finishes;
- 🔹lightweight designs;
- 🔹extended latch systems.

How to Install an AR-15 BCG? 🔧
🔎 AR-15 BCGs are relatively easy to install if you have the right tools and know a few basic steps. Here we’ll cover how to properly install an AR-15 Bolt Carrier Group (BCG).
Required Tools:
- Punches 🔩
- Hammer 🔨
- AR armorer’s wrench 🔧
- AR upper receiver block or vice block ⛏
📌 Step 1: Remove any existing BCG from the upper receiver. If there is no existing BCG, go to Step 2.
- To do this, remove takedown/pivot pins and separate the upper receiver from the lower receiver. Place the upper receiver block or vise block into the upper receiver to secure it in place.
📌 Step 2: Clean up any build-up inside the AR’s upper receiver with a solvent and punch so that your BCG can move freely when installed.
📌 Step 3: Insert your BCG into the upper receiver, making sure that everything is aligned correctly.
- Use an armorer’s wrench if needed for proper fitment.
📌 Step 4: Securely attach your BCG by fastening the takedown/pivot pins into place.
- Hammer lightly if necessary to make sure they are flush with the upper receiver.
📌 Step 5: Once your BCG is installed, test-fire it in a safe environment to make sure everything is working properly.

I’ve just purchased one of these to fit an assembled Aero upper that I also ordered. Let’s discover if it lives up to the hype! To make sure, I have a couple of thousand rounds on hand and ready for this new combination from Aero. I’ll share the results with you later)))))
Cryptic Coatings boast Bolt Carrier Groups (BCGs) that are vastly superior to Nickel Boron BCGs. I own four FailZero BCGs and a WMD, yet Cryptic Coatings remain top-of-the-line – no tarnishing like FailZero, WMD, or any other nickel boron counterparts!
I’ve never seen a Fail Zero tarnish, they only get dirty.
Based on my personal experience and expert opinions, I would like to suggest that the Palmetto State Armory Fathers of Freedom BCG made by Microbes for $100 is the best affordable option. Please note that this recommendation only applies to the Fathers of Freedom BCG and not any other options offered by the manufacturer.
As I am new to the world of higher-tier AR15s, I would like to inquire about the potential differences between the Sonics BCG and the NP3. Are they the same, or is there a distinction between the two that I should be aware of?
No, the Sonics BCG and the NP3 are not the same.
⚫️ The Sonics AR-15 BCG is made of high-grade steel and features a black nitride finish for increased durability and corrosion resistance. It’s engineered with an improved bolt geometry to reduce drag on parts during cycling, which helps increase reliability.
⚪️ On the other hand, NP3 AR-15 BCGs are designed from stainless steel and feature a nickel Teflon coating for superior protection against wear and tear. This coating also makes it resistant to various solvents, oils, and cleaning products without affecting performance in any way.
I would like to know what the most reliable and trustworthy bolt carrier group is that can withstand any possible challenge without faltering. In other words, what is the absolute best option available?
According to experts, and from my experience, LMT and KAC are the top-performing options for bolt carrier groups in terms of reliability. However, it is advisable to purchase several bolt carrier groups from reliable brands such as DD, BCM, SIONICS, RADIAN, or AERO as backups.
I suggest considering the LMT E-Bolt installed in a KAC Sandcutter or a full chrome KAC E3.
Colt and BCM are excellent options. However, if you want to overspend, LMT and KAC are also available.
In terms of quality of life, the SIONICS NP3 and the Microbest Chrome BCGs are the only bolt carrier groups I am interested in purchasing. Since I shoot short barrel suppressed guns, I don’t anticipate the need for an LMT BCG and therefore do not find it worth the cost.
I am confused about the distinction between bolt carrier groups from various brands, such as BCM or SOLGW. It is unclear how they differ from each other or from brands like Aero or FN, since they are not manufacturing their own. Is it possible that people are just drawn to the brand name on the side of the BCG?
🔔 When it comes to purchasing bolt carrier groups, the price point may reflect the level of quality control (QC) or testing that the product has undergone.
📢 Some companies may include upgraded extractor springs and inserts in their BCGs, which may also affect the price. ➕ Additionally, some manufacturers may not conduct both HPT and MPI testing, while others may only perform MPI testing, which may not be sufficient.
As someone who personally owns and frequently uses bolt carrier groups, I highly recommend the products from Sionics, Colt, SOLGW, BCM, and Centurion Arms. However, I cannot speak for other brands since I have no experience using their products.
