How to Professionally SIGHT IN A SCOPE? 💡

🧐 Sighting in scope is an important process that ensures your rifle is accurate and ready to shoot. 👣 Here are the general steps for professionally sighting in a scope:

🔰 Mount the scope

  • ⇒ Before you can sight in your scope, you need to mount it properly on your rifle. Make sure it is securely attached and aligned with the bore of the rifle.
🔰 Bore-sight the rifle

  • ⇒ This is the process of aligning the scope with the bore of the rifle. You can do this by placing the rifle on a stable rest and looking down the bore while adjusting the scope’s reticle until it is centered on the target.
🔰 Rough sight-in

  • ⇒ Shoot a few rounds at a target at a close range (around 25 yards) to get a rough idea of where your bullets are hitting. Adjust the scope’s windage and elevation turrets to bring the point of impact closer to your desired point of aim.
🔰 Fine-tune the sighting

  • ⇒ Move the target back to your desired shooting distance (e.g. 100 yards), and shoot a few more rounds. Use a spotting scope or binoculars to observe where the bullets are hitting the target, and make small adjustments to the scope’s windage and elevation turrets until the point of impact is hitting the exact point of aim.
🔰 Confirm the zero

  • ⇒ Shoot a group of three to five shots at the target to confirm that your adjustments have brought the rifle to the desired point of impact. If necessary, make further adjustments until you are satisfied with the accuracy.
🔰 Record your settings:

  • Once you have sighted your rifle, record the windage and elevation adjustments you made on your scope. This will be helpful if you need to re-sight your rifle in the future, or if you need to adjust for different types of ammunition.

🎥 Watch the video to learn more:

⚠️ It’s important to note that the specific steps for sighting in scope may vary depending on the type of rifle and scope you are using, and the shooting conditions you will encounter. 📝 Always refer to your rifle and scope’s owner’s manual for specific instructions and safety guidelines.

First Focal Plane v. Second Focal Plane ⚔️

📍 The first focal plane (FFP) and the second focal plane (SFP) are two types of reticle placement options for rifle scopes. Here are the differences between the two:

✔️ In a first focal plane scope, the reticle is located in front of the erector lenses, which means that the reticle appears to change size along with the image as you adjust the magnification. This means that the reticle remains proportionate to the target, no matter the magnification level. This makes it easier to make long-range shots with accurate holdovers, as the reticle markings remain consistent with the target size at any magnification. ✔️ In a second focal plane scope, the reticle is located behind the erector lenses, which means that the reticle appears to stay the same size, no matter the magnification level. This means that the size of the reticle remains constant, while the target image gets larger or smaller with changing magnification. This can make holdovers more challenging, as the reticle markings do not remain consistent with the target size at different magnification levels.

📢 In general, the choice between an FFP or SFP scope depends on the intended use:

  • ⚫️ FFP scopes are generally preferred for long-range shooting or hunting, where the ability to make accurate holdovers is crucial.
  • ⚫️ SFP scopes are often used for hunting or short to mid-range shooting, where the target size is typically known, and the reticle does not need to be adjusted as frequently.

FAQ 🤔

Where are Vortex scopes made?
🔎 Vortex Optics is an American company that designs and engineers their products in 📍 the United States.

However, like many other companies in the firearms and optics industry, Vortex are manufactured in various countries including 📍 Japan, 📍 the Philippines, and 📍 China.

Do you have to register a Vortex scope?
📌 It depends on the specific scope and your location. In general, registering your Vortex scope is not mandatory, but it is recommended as it can provide some benefits:

  • 🔹 Some scopes come with a warranty, and registering your scope can help you take advantage of the warranty if you need it.
  • 🔹 Registering your scope can also help Vortex keep you informed of any important updates or recalls that may be relevant to your product.
Does painting a Vortex scope void the warranty?
⭕️ Yes, painting a Vortex may void the warranty. According to Vortex Optics, any modification or alteration to their products may void the VIP Warranty. This includes painting or coating the scope, as it may affect the functionality and performance of the scope.

  • 💡 If you want to personalize or customize the appearance of your scope, it’s best to use non-permanent methods such as a vinyl wrap or camouflage tape. These methods will not damage the scope or affect its performance, and can easily be removed if necessary.
Are Vortex scopes waterproof?
✅ Yes, most are waterproof. Vortex Optics designs its scopes to be rugged and durable, and many of its scopes are sealed with O-rings to prevent water, dust, and debris from getting inside the scope.

  • 📝 Vortex that are advertised as waterproof are tested to meet the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard 60529 for waterproofing. This means that the scopes are designed to withstand immersion in water to a certain depth for a certain amount of time without suffering damage or leaks.

⚠️ However, it’s important to note that not all options are created equal when it comes to waterproofing. 🔎 Make sure to check the specifications and features of the specific model you are interested in to ensure that it meets your needs and requirements.

Does Vortex scopes have a lifetime warranty?
📢 Vortex Optics offers a VIP Warranty for all their products, including Vortex. The VIP Warranty stands for “Very Important Promise,” which means that Vortex will repair or replace your scope in the event of damage or defects.

  • ✅ This warranty is fully transferable and does not require a receipt or proof of purchase. Vortex will repair or replace your scope at no charge, and if they cannot repair it, they will replace it with a product of equal or greater value.
  • ❌ The VIP Warranty does not cover loss, theft, deliberate damage, cosmetic damage, or damage caused by misuse, abuse, or improper maintenance.

💡 However, it is one of the most comprehensive warranties in the optics industry and provides peace of mind for Vortex customers.

What are Vortex scopes made from?
📢 Vortex are made from a variety of materials, depending on the specific model and application. ⤵️ However, some common materials include:

  • 🔸 Aircraft-grade aluminum: for the main body of the scope, including the tube and housing. This material is lightweight yet strong and durable, making it ideal for withstanding the recoil and shock of firearms.
  • 🔸 High-density glass: for the lenses to ensure clarity, brightness, and sharpness of the image. The glass used is typically high-density, low-dispersion glass, which helps to reduce chromatic aberration and improve image quality.
  • 🔸 Coatings: on the lenses to improve light transmission, reduce glare, and enhance contrast. The coatings used can vary from model to model, but may include anti-reflective coatings, hydrophobic coatings, and scratch-resistant coatings.
  • 🔸 Rubber and polymer: some feature rubber or polymer components, such as the eyepiece or focus knob. These materials provide a comfortable and secure grip, even in wet or slippery conditions.

Based on my personal experience, I have used two Vortex Scopes – the 2.5-10 PST and the 4-16 PST FFP, and I did not encounter any issues with either of them. I am highly satisfied with their performance, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to my friends or even strangers online.

Throughout my life, I have exclusively used Leupold scopes and have been generally satisfied with their performance. However, there was one instance where I had trouble maintaining zero on a .50 Beowulf, which I want to replace with something else. Vortex has gained immense popularity in the market. I am wondering if this is merely hype or if Vortex scopes are truly on par with or even superior to Leupold in terms of quality.

In my opinion, Vortex provides great value for the price. As some others have noted, the quality can differ across their product lines, but generally speaking, you can expect to receive what you paid for.

Over time, I have gradually swapped out most of my optics with Vortex products. The combination of their impressive quality, exceptional value, and diverse range of product lines consistently draws me back to them.

One of Vortex’s standout features is their incredible warranty, which speaks to their confidence in their products. In terms of price-to-quality ratio, Vortex generally hits the sweet spot.
That said, Vortex frequently offers the best value in the market, and its products often represent the highest quality option within a given price range, especially if you can find a good deal.

I recently used my Vortex 4-16×50 FFP EBR 1 Mrad scope on my Savage .308 rifle at Woody’s, and it performed exceptionally well. I was impressed with how accurately the Mrads in the scope correlated with the Hornady ballistic software.
I am so satisfied with the performance of this scope that I am now considering purchasing another for my AR15 rifle. The lifetime warranty, along with the transferable ownership warranty, is an excellent feature.

Throughout my experience with various scopes, I have used products from Bushnell, Burris, and Vortex. Out of these brands, I have had the fewest issues with Vortex optics, which have been highly reliable for me.

🔔 Vortex Optics offers a variety of reticles in their scopes, including:

🔸 Duplex: The most basic reticle, with thin crosshairs in the center and thicker bars on the outer edges.

🔸 Dead-Hold BDC: A reticle with hash marks that allow for bullet drop compensation at various distances.

🔸 V-Brite: A reticle with a red dot in the center for quick target acquisition, and a duplex crosshair for precise aiming.

🔸 V-Plex: A variation of the duplex reticle with thicker posts at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions.

🔸 EBR (Enhanced Battle Reticle): A reticle designed for long-range shooting, with a grid pattern that allows for precise holdover and windage adjustments.

🔸 MOA: A reticle with hash marks that allow for Minute of Angle (MOA) adjustments for windage and elevation.

🔸 Illuminated Reticles: Several of Vortex’s reticles are illuminated, with adjustable brightness levels for low-light shooting conditions.

🔸 Christmas Tree: A reticle with vertical and horizontal hash marks, resembling a Christmas tree. Used for long-range shooting and ranging targets.

From my own personal experience, I have used a Vortex Razor 5-20 scope during multiple deployments, as well as a Razor 1-6 on an MK17. These scopes proved to be so reliable and effective that we outfitted all of our long gun personnel with them on our most recent overseas mission. I have also mounted my original Razor scope onto three separate 300wm rifles, multiple .50 caliber guns, as well as my own personal firearms, and it has performed flawlessly. Overall, my experience with Vortex’s Razor scopes has been nothing short of excellent.

I am a proud owner of four of their products. A few years ago, while using my Razor binoculars in a blind, I accidentally dropped them, causing both eyepieces to break. When I contacted Vortex to purchase replacements, they went above and beyond my expectations by offering to send me new ones free of charge – they even covered the cost of shipping! I was blown away, especially considering the accident was my fault.

👏 It’s great that you’ve had a good experience with your Vortex Diamondback!

🔫 For a similar scope option for your son’s rifle, you might want to consider the Vortex Crossfire II 4-12×40. It’s also a great value for the price and has a similar magnification range and objective size.

Speaking from my own personal experience, I can vouch for the quality and durability of these optics. Despite my admittedly rough treatment of my equipment, all three of my Vortex optics have held up without issue. I can confidently say that I have not experienced any failures or malfunctions with them.

Based on my personal experience, I highly recommend Vortex optics. I have a PST Viper 6-24 SFP, and it has performed flawlessly without any issues. The scope tracks precisely and I have never had difficulty hitting my target. I am a big fan of Vortex and will continue to recommend their products.
